Nicky, the last - and by acclaim the best - of the five Galasso brothers of West Islip, still gets a lump in his throat when he and his teammates sit down for their pregame ritual.
One by one, the Lions use a black magic marker to trace the letters "C'' and "G'' vertically, in calligraphy style, on their legs. They are the initials of Nicky Galasso's mother, Cindy, who died of lung cancer in the summer of 2004.
She was so popular among Nicky's teammates, having been with them from their early days in youth lacrosse, that when he started his first full varsity season in the ninth grade in 2007, the 'CG' tradition began as a tribute. "I was a momma's boy," Galasso said, his voice full of pride. "Once I leave, it will probably stop, but it's still kind of a motivating thing for me."
That was especially true last season, when Galasso and several of his best friends who were seniors combined to lead the Lions to their third state Class A boys lacrosse title in four years. "Those guys - Ian Braddish, Mike McCormack, Shane Craig - I played with them as a kid when my Mom was around."
With profound insight rare for a teenager, Galasso speaks openly about his mother. "If she were still around, my life would be so much different," the two-time Newsday All-<a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> player said. "I would probably be less mature. I'm more mature now because of what I've had to deal with. Twelve is young to lose your mother."
Maybe that's why Cindy Galasso is never far from her son's mind. "When we win the states, I get upset a little bit, thinking about it and wishing she were here," Galasso said softly. "But winning three state championships in four years of high school is a pretty good accomplishment. I know she'd be proud."
Yes, Cindy would enjoy watching Nicky chest bump a teammate after goals, sometimes pausing to point skyward to her. His chest should be plenty sore this season. The <a href="/topics/North_Carolina">North Carolina</a>-bound senior attack was Long Island's leading scorer as a junior with 136 points (71 goals) and is Newsday's reigning <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> Player of the year. He scored eight goals in West Islip's first two games this season. His stick-handling and shooting skills, honed since he was a first-grader playing with the third-graders at Coach Craig's summer camp, are in a class by themselves.
The family bond is tighter than the lacing on his lacrosse sticks. "He has a pure love of family and good recognition of right and wrong," Craig said. "He's the best of the five brothers that played here and when he's all through, he might be the best player in Long Island history."
Galasso says that's all because of his band of brothers - Sal, 26, Danny, 24, Victor, 23 and Vinny, 20. "They all accomplished a lot. They were all great athletes," Nicky said. "I get all my talent from them."
Brotherly love, however, meant tough love when Nicky was younger. "When I was 10 and I was a fat little kid, they'd chase me around in their car to make me run," he said, now able to laugh about it. "They'd go slow and bump me. I'd be crying the whole time. They did a bunch of things to get me in shape. They made me tougher."
Then Nicky hit his growth spurt in middle school and the baby fat was gone. Today, he's a rugged 6-0, 190 pounds. Galasso may be tough on the outside, but inside beats the heart of the momma's boy he remains.
"Last year, there was a special-ed kid in one of our elementary schools. He wore a jersey with [Nicky's] No. 5 and had a No. 5 shaved into his head," Craig said. "Nicky finds out and at <a href="/topics/Stony_Brook%2C_NY">Stony Brook</a>, after our Long Island championship while everybody else is still celebrating on the field, he goes up into the stands and gives the kid an autographed stick. He didn't tell anybody beforehand and he didn't make a big deal of it. That's the kind of kid he is."
The kind of kid whose mother would be so proud.

Galasso's mother always in W. Islip star's thoughts

Shannon Gilroy is a ferocious fraidy cat. Standing amid two reporters and West Islip boys lacrosse standout Nicky Galasso, the only time the admittedly shy Gilroy made a peep was when asked if she had met <a href="/topics/Tim_Tebow">Tim Tebow</a> on a college recruiting visit to the <a href="/topics/University_of_Florida">University of Florida</a>.
"Yeah, I got to meet him," the Northport junior said. 
Yeah, no big deal. Tebow is only a <a href="/topics/Heisman_Trophy">Heisman Trophy</a>-winning quarterback and one of the most recognizable athletes in America.
Forgive "The Franchise'' - that's what Gilroy's teammates call her - if she isn't forthcoming. She saves her fervor for the field.
Gilroy scored a Long Island-high 113 goals last season and was the only sophomore from the Island named first team All-American. Easily the most intimidating presence in every game she plays, Gilroy is just scratching the surface, according to Northport coach Carol Rose.
"She got bigger, got taller, got stronger. She's a one-woman wrecking crew," Rose said. "They call her 'The Franchise' and she's living up to that."
Nine goals and five assists in a 26-9 season-opening win at Smithtown West, and 10 more goals (tying a school record) in a 21-9 victory over North Babylon, certainly affirmed Gilroy's status.
But she knows franchise players deliver championships. She acknowledged it's hard to believe Northport has never won a state title in its illustrious history with countless All-Americans. She'd like the 2010 team to be the first.
"This year, our motto is 'dream big,' " she said. "We've just got to find a way to get over the hump."
Consider Farmingdale that roadblock. Three of the last four years, the Dalers have ended Northport's season in the Long Island Class A final, including a double-overtime affair in 2008 and a 13-12 decision last season - Northport's only loss.
"We want to go to states," Gilroy said in her most forceful voice. "It's hard when you don't get that far. Our team comes out to play. It's all about your will to win."
Gilroy may be timid in social settings, but give her the ball in crunchtime and she'll fling all fear out the window. Down one to West Islip in last year's county final, Gilroy tied the score with 31.6 seconds left on a hard shot while falling down. She scored the winner with 13.8 seconds to play. It was her eighth goal of the game.
And she's better this year? Yes, even the competition's taking notice.
"I'm scared of her," said West Babylon senior Alyssa Murray, who is a year older than Gilroy, taller and the only other returning All-Long Island player.
But she works out with Gilroy. "She's an animal," Murray added. "She is all muscle. She can definitely beat me up."
Gilroy, of course, disagreed, but even her former Northport and soon-to-be <a href="/topics/Florida">Florida</a> teammate Katie Ciaci, a two-time high school All-American defender, doesn't want any part of guarding her.
"That's one of the girls you want to play with and not against," she said.
And Ciaci believes in Gilroy's leadership qualities, as she was part of the 2009 squad that elected Gilroy a captain at the end of last season. Said Rose: "It made her more vocal."
"Around teammates, the real me comes out," Gilroy insists. "Especially when I'm competing because I always want to win."
Gilroy showed decisiveness in her college decision, committing to Florida with two high school seasons remaining.
"The kid's happy as a clown," Rose said of Gilroy's college choice. "It's a place where she can shine."
While Gilroy's star shines bright at Northport, she is hoping her team can shine later this spring in Cortland for the state tournament.

Standing only 5-3, Floral Park's Samantha Giovanniello grips a softball with red painted fingernails. 
As the 15-year-old stares into her catcher's mitt, her mascara-rimmed eyes narrow to an intimidating glare. Suddenly she lunges off the rubber, whips her arm in a circle, snaps her wrist and launches a perfect curveball across the plate. 
"I could strike out the baseball team, absolutely," said Giovanniello, who last season had 243 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA in leading Floral Park to the state Class A championship. 
Tough talk from any girl. But Giovanniello's mechanics give her the game-time performance to back it up.

Softball pitching mechanics elude most of the baseball world, with the windmill delivery so starkly different from a catapult overhand throw. Giovanniello, who has pitched since she was 6 years old, says good softball mechanics are just as difficult to master. 
"If a pitcher isn't constantly practicing, the muscle memory that is built is easily lost, and the next time the pitcher throws, she is back to square one trying to get her mechanics to click," Giovanniello said. 
A pitcher's windup is determined by whatever makes her feel confident and gives her body momentum. Some girls swing their pitching arm behind them and slap their thigh with their glove so hard that they get welts. 
Softball pitchers' fastballs are about 30 miles per hour slower than a major-leaguer's. So why do so few hitters make contact during a fastpitch softball game? 
On an episode of Fox Sports Net's "Sport Science,'' researchers said hitters facing a 95-mph fastball from the <a href="/topics/Major_League_Baseball">MLB</a> distance of 60 feet, 6 inches, have .395 seconds to react. But softball hitters facing a 70-mph fastball from 43 feet, have only .35 seconds to see and hit the ball. 
Giovanniello's favorite pitch, the rise ball, would give even major-leaguers nightmares. Risers do not exist in baseball because a ball launched by an overhand throw travels on a high to low path toward the hitter. Softballs rocket toward a hitter on a rising trajectory. 
"My rise ball is the least detectable as a batter," Giovanniello said. 
When pitching a rise ball, Giovanniello keeps her weight back and her hand underneath the ball. In the last second of the pitch, she drops her back hip and throwing shoulder, tucks her elbow against her side, twists the ball as if she is opening a door handle, and snaps her wrist up. 
"The release point of my rise ball is much lower than that of my fastball. I release the ball around my knee," Giovanniello said. The more rotations she gets on the ball, the more the pitch will break. 
To get their numbers up on a radar gun, girls cannot rely on arm strength. "Power all comes from your legs," Giovanniello said, adding that her calf muscles are the strongest part of her body. 
The only leg movement a pitcher is allowed is one lunge toward home plate. Giovanniello makes the most of her one step by pushing hard off the rubber. Her back leg drags, acting as a rudder. 
Velocity also is generated by arm speed and snapping with the wrist in the last second a pitcher still is gripping the ball. A pitcher's arm becomes increasingly faster during the windmill. Giovanniello stretches her arm straight to make it as long a lever as possible. She also opens her hips, pointing her navel toward first base, so her arm can whip through the power zone of the windmill to finish the pitch. 
As in baseball, hours spent training on the mound pay off. In the state tournament last year, Giovanniello tossed a one-hitter in the semifinal, then experienced a career highlight with another one-hitter in the championship game - and a strikeout of the final batter. 
"I threw my glove in the air and hugged my catcher,'' Giovanniello said, recalling that moment with a smile. 
Even in that, her mechanics were perfect.

Mechanics help Giovanniello own the mound

It was, if you'll excuse the cliche, a David and Goliath matchup, as re-imagined by <a href="/topics/Ikea">Ikea</a>. 
Bryan, the tiny righthander, against the Verbitsky's mammoth (for a toddler, at least) recliner. Tennis ball in hand - at 2 years old, he wasn't picky - Verbitsky went into his windup, then the throw. 
The recliner invariably won the living room battle. The bright yellow ball skittered harmlessly off the cushions, tempting Verbitsky to try again. It would take about another 15 years for that major league-caliber slider to develop. 
"I would just want to throw things as hard as I could," Verbitsky says now, 16 years older and about three feet taller. He still does it, too - the throwing hard thing. Only instead, the Island Trees pitcher and outfielder baffles hitters, who often only can watch as his fastball, clocked at 91 mph, zips through the strike zone. He's last year's Diamond Award winner - given to the top position player in Nassau - and is headed to Hofstra on a full scholarship. 
Yes, a lot has changed, but just like all those years ago, Verbitsky still is trying to topple giants - ones that aren't nearly as cushy or as immobile. These nemeses take the form of battering Rams. 
Island Trees dropped the Class A championship to the Clarke Rams last season in a 5-4 loss in Game 3. And don't think it doesn't still bother Verbitsky, the fact that Island Trees hasn't been able to wrest the conference championship from Clarke since the Bulldogs won it his freshman year. 
Go ahead, ask him if he'd give up his big award for two more runs all those months ago. Hands folded sedately on a desk in coach Joe D'Auria's social studies classroom, the well-spoken senior perks up and literally doesn't bat an eyelash.
"Any day of the week." He says it like he means it, too. 
It's a moot point, though, because it was Verbitsky's incredible season that helped inch the Bulldogs so close to glory. A versatile player, he batted .467 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs and 35 runs. He also went 8-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 63 innings. 
Coaching assistant Dan Fazio, who was a senior when Verbitsky was a freshman, saw the talent early. "I remember his first at-bat, he smoked the ball in the hole," Fazio said. "He's never been overmatched. I've never seen someone hit the ball with so much authority the other way." 
Then there's the pitching. Island Trees returns with three top-line starters: Verbitsky, Brandon Garcia and Dan Bartlett. Verbitsky says they're all aces, and he does it without a sniff of false modesty. His dad, Troy, says that his son always has been levelheaded. D'Auria takes it a step further.
"He makes my life easy as a coach," D'Auria said. "[He's] humble - other kids with that talent can get overly cocky, uncoachable." 
It doesn't go unnoticed, despite the attention-grabbing big hits and beefy pitching repertoire that Hofstra coach Patrick Anderson calls "off the charts." Anderson tells a story about how he and his assistant stopped by unannounced one day to watch Verbitsky. They came from behind the supermarket that abuts the grass and surprised him as he was playing centerfield. Verbitsky waved nonchalantly, like an old friend, and the coach was taken aback by his innocence and good humor. Anderson laughs: "I guess you had to be there." 
Perhaps, but there's one place Verbitsky's levity doesn't extend, and that's the Clarke game. His face clouds over when the topic comes up in conversation.
"That's been eating me for awhile," he said. "I don't really have personal goals. That's my biggest goal, to win it."
Until then, Verbitsky and Island Trees find themselves in an awkward position. Ability-based grouping means they're already in the playoffs, so they're looking up at Clarke knowing that a second chance is only a stone's throw away. 
Or a tennis ball, as the case may be.

Only goal for Island Trees' Verbitsky: A title

There isn't much more Roslyn star distance runner Emily Lipari needs to do in her high school track career.
A dominant performer since her freshman year and one of the most accomplished athletes on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a>, Lipari has won eight Federation championships and will be in position to add to that total at the NYSPHSAA state championships in June.
But the national and local accolades she has received haven't prompted her to take any days off this season. 
"I still love to compete and I still have some unfinished business to take care of this spring,'' said Lipari, who won the 1,500 indoor Federation championship in a meet-record time of 4:28.21 at Cornell in March.
That performance epitomized the road Lipari has taken the last three-plus years. 
"I came into that race wanting to set the meet record,'' said the Villanova-bound senior, who won the event for the second straight year. 
Her indoor season didn't stop there as she traveled to <a href="/topics/Boston">Boston</a> the following week and won the mile at the <a href="/topics/Nike">Nike</a> indoor national championships. It was Lipari's second straight national title in the indoor mile. 
Though she has starred on a national scale, Lipari still values her numerous <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> championships. "Any title is nice,'' Lipari said. "You always want to compete and you always want to win, no matter what the race is. Any trophy is nice.''
As for the spring season, expect to see more of the same from Lipari, who will be increasing her workload.
She participated only in the 1,500 at the indoor state championships, but has her sights set on taking home the 1,500- and 3,000-meter Federation championships in the outdoor season.
The competition will be fierce as a solid group of Long Island's top distance runners, including Holy Trinity's Colleen Schmidt, North Shore's Samantha Nadel, <a href="/topics/Riverhead%2C_NY">Riverhead</a>'s Katie Skinner, <a href="/topics/West_Islip%2C_NY">West Islip</a>'s Ali Foote and even eighth-grade sensation Brigid Brennan of <a href="/topics/Northport%2C_NY">Northport</a> figure to challenge Lipari. 
Challengers from outside the Long Island area include Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall and Lizzie Predmore of Shenendehowa. 
"I'll be in great shape to run the 3,000, too,'' said Lipari, a three-time 3,000-meter outdoor Federation champion. "New York State is ultra-competitive and I will need to be at my best.''

Roslyn's Lipari: 'Unfinished business' this spring

There's no truth to any rumor that Nolan Gelman can make dogs love cats. But he does have Division I football and tennis coaches working together.
Gelman is a Renaissance Man at Half Hollow Hills West. The All-Long Island soccer star/Long Island football champion kicker/three-time All-State tennis player is headed to Bryant University in <a href="/topics/Rhode_Island">Rhode Island</a> next year to play football and tennis. The majority of the individual tennis tournaments are on autumn weekends, the same as college football games. But Gelman said the coaches at the Division I school are working together to make sure he is able to compete for both teams.
"The tennis coach has been great about it,'' said Gelman, who will have a chance to compete for starting place-kicker. "It makes him look good if I hit a game-winning field goal.''
Playing two sports in the same season is nothing new for Gelman. He has been doing it since his sophomore year when Hills West football coach Kyle Madden showed up at soccer practice looking for a kicker. Gelman kicked the ball the farthest and earned the job.
Later that season, in a 24-hour span, he made a game-winning corner kick in the Long Island soccer championship and a 31-yard, fourth-quarter field goal in a Division III football semifinal playoff game. In his final high school football game, with crosswinds of more than 30 mph, he was 6-for-6 on extra points as Hills West won its first Long Island championship.
Gelman has played soccer and tennis since age 5. The football success was a surprise. "My guidance counselor was saying to my parents the other day, 'four years ago would you ever imagine him being a Division I football player?' Never.''
Before he goes on to major in multitasking, Gelman has one final high school goal: a Suffolk singles tennis title. Last season in doubles, Gelman and <a href="/topics/Matt_Stevens">Matt Stevens</a> reached the county final and state quarterfinals. Before his junior year he won the singles gold at the Empire State Games. He has been the Colts' top singles player since eighth grade.
"It's been a pleasure watching him transition from a middle-schooler,'' said Hills West tennis coach Kim Langendorfer. "He has a really unique opportunity. I don't know of anyone else who has ever done this.''
Gelman was even on the varsity basketball team, but decided not to play his senior year. That might have been a good idea - his closet is already so full of varsity letters that he lost count.
Said Gelman: "My friends were trying to count it the other day. It's close to 15 or 16.''

It was a question that should have been answered without hesitation. But Suzie Lee had to think about the answer. 
When asked if she had won three straight state championships - it's actually two - Lee tilted her head, a bit confused, and paused to wonder if perhaps she had won three. 
After some deliberation, the Commack senior concluded that it was in fact "only'' two consecutive state championships. 
It's easy for Lee to lose sight of how many state titles she has won, considering the number of national tournaments she competes in. How she captured that second title, however, is unforgettable. 
On the final day of the state tournament at Foxfire Golf Course in Baldwinsville last June, Lee erased a six-stroke deficit and pulled even heading to what would be a dramatic 18th hole . . . 
It was five years earlier when Lee's mother placed her in a summer golf group at Clearview Golf Course. At the urging of her instructor, who recognized an instant talent with a powerful swing that was more advanced than most boys her age, Lee began to pursue golf. 
Lee quit her swim team and Taekwondo, where she was a black belt, to focus entirely on golf. Her music lessons - she played five instruments, ranging from flute to electric guitar - also stopped. Five years of golf training began, preparing her for the day she would be stuck in the sand on the 18th hole at states. 
With her second shot on 18, Lee's title hopes were shaky. Nestled in a greenside bunker, her chances of repeating as champion seemed as buried as her ball . . . 
Ranked 25th nationally by the American Junior Golf Association, Lee finished ninth in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship and fourth in the Junior <a href="/topics/PGA_Championship">PGA Championship</a> last July. 
"Everyone would tell me how amazing she was,'' first-year Commack coach Charlie Bauer said. "Watching her in the first couple weeks of practice, it became very apparent to me that everything I had heard about her was true.'' 
Lee's strength is her driver, which she hits about 265 yards, a length that would make most grown men envious. But a driver is of no use when your ball is deep in the sand. 
Trying to save par, Lee swung away with her sand wedge. "I was hoping to get out of the bunker, go up-and-down, tie it and maybe go to sudden death,'' Lee said. "I had no idea it was going in . . . '' 
Forgive Lee when she takes time to recount her golf victories. The calculations will only grow more difficult, presumably, as the victories mount at the <a href="/topics/University_of_South_Carolina">University of South Carolina</a>, where she has signed a letter of intent, and eventually the <a href="/topics/Ladies_Professional_Golf_Association">LPGA</a>. 
"Suzie wants to be a successful <a href="/topics/Ladies_Professional_Golf_Association">LPGA</a> player,'' her mother, Jean Lee, said. "A Hall of Fame player, not just a player.'' 
The Hall of Fame tops the list of ambitious goals for the 17-year-old Lee. She also hopes to qualify for the 2016 <a href="/topics/Taekwondo_at_the_Olympics">Olympics</a> and lead the United States to a gold medal. 
"It's not really pressure,'' Lee said of her lofty ambitions. "It's just my dream, so that's what I set for myself. I'm just chasing my own dreams.'' 
The ball emerged from a cloud of sand and touched down on the green 10 feet from the hole, then rolled toward the cup and dropped. The improbable birdie gave Lee a one-stroke victory and her second straight state championship. 
Or was it her third?

If you're looking for a discussion on the best team in Nassau, it's going to be hard to find many who will argue against Garden City. Ranked No. 3 nationally by Inside Lacrosse magazine, the Trojans are the undisputed power of Class B, having won the last four Nassau championships.
Juniors Stephen Jahelka and Brian Fischer, who are both headed to <a href="/topics/Harvard_University">Harvard</a>, lead the defense. Junior Tom Gordon (19 goals, six assists last season), who committed to <a href="/topics/Johns_Hopkins">Johns Hopkins</a>, tops a deep midfield that includes sophomore Patric Berkery and seniors Matt Montgomery (Tufts) and Kevin Dachille. On attack, sophomore Devin Dwyer (23-29) is a feeder and scorer.
CLASS A
Hicksville, the defending county champs, returns senior defenseman James Lang, junior midfielder Brandon Gamblin (38-32) and junior attack Joe Leonard (38-38). The Comets are the team to chase, but there are other legitimate contenders.
 At Farmingdale, midfielder Korey Hendrickson (21-9), and attacks Sal Tuttle (26-11) and Brian Prendergast (21-9) pace the offense. J.J. Ostrander and Keith Hadnagy lead the defense.
 Fast-paced Baldwin has Jacksonville-bound Kyle Rebman (51-26), Troy Dennis (24-17), Max Malenowski (26-28) and faceoff man Billy Diegnan.
 Oceanside brings back a playmaker in Chris Hughes (23-32) and a speedy midfield led by junior Nick Sherry.
 Goalie Eric Schneider is Massapequa's standout, and the Chiefs have midfielders Rob Goeren (Bryant) and Ken Fundus (Adelphi). At Syosset, Doug Tesoriero (Cornell) is great on faceoffs and defender Alirio Demerieles (Yale) bears watching.
 East Meadow and Port Washington will also try to be among the eight "A'' playoff teams.
CLASS B
Wantagh leads the list of challengers in Conference B-I. It returns a potent offense led by Brandon Mangan, junior <a href="/topics/Ryan_Walsh_%28footballer%29">Ryan Walsh</a> (32-36) and junior midfielder Joe Stottler (26-26).
 Division has a senior-laden group with attack Fred Mase (NYIT), midfielder Tom Duggan (NYIT), LSM Kyle Frenger (Molloy) and attack Cory Triola. At Long Beach, keep an eye on goalie <a href="/topics/Eddie_Collins">Eddie Collins</a>.
 In B-II, Lynbrook and South Side are neck-and-neck as the favorites. For Lynbrook, senior Tom DeNapoli is a do-it-all player. Attack Alex Maini (26-19) returns as do defensemen Gregg Fraistat and Ralph Bilotta.
 South Side has a scorer in Gavin Ahern and is strong on faceoffs with defenseman Greg Cove and midfielder Alex Doerflein (both headed to Binghamton). Midfielder Connor Waxon (Hofstra) and Bryan Gerrato (Navy) add depth.
 Plainedge, led by midfielder Dylan Levings (Yale), and Hewlettl also likely will contend. Watch Bethpage and Glen Cove, led by Doug Tripp (51 goals).
CLASS C
Manhasset and Cold Spring Harbor have met in the Class C title game every season since 2004 and this year figures to be no different.
 Manhasset, the defending state champ, graduated 21 seniors so it has a largely new group. But three-year starting midfielder Drew Belinsky (Penn), senior faceoff guru Ricky Buhr (<a href="/topics/Syracuse">Syracuse</a>) and senior defenseman Kevin Coleman will be familiar.
 Cold Spring Harbor, which won the county title three straight seasons before 2009, is led by senior midfielder Christian Kennedy (Georgetown), returning from an ACL injury suffered in the football season. Attacks Jack Wallice, a junior, and sophomore Sean Doyle are also key.
 At Seaford, look for attack Billy Kempner, and also watch Floral Park midfielder Drew Viscusi (28-21).

Nassau boys lacrosse: Garden City reigns again

Just how tough is Class A in Suffolk? Consider this.
The team that spoiled the home opener for national powerhouse West Islip on its new turf field was the No. 8 seed, Sachem North. The Lions were not only the coaches' top choice in Division I, but at the time, were the nation's No. 1 boys team, according to Inside Lacrosse magazine.
However, West Islip knocked off Chaminade, another nationally ranked team, three days later and reaffirmed its status as a leading contender to defend its state title. There will be stiff competition, however, in Division I, where 12 of 23 teams qualify for the playoffs.
CLASS A
West Islip is led by seniors Nicky Galasso (attack), Andrew Hodgson and Rob Moore (midfield), and Eddie Ryan (defense), all committed to play college lacrosse. So are junior middies Conor Braddish and Mike Sagler and attack Drew Federico.
 Ward Melville, the only team to defeat the Lions last season returns 27 players. All-County defenseman Matt Kunkel (headed to Duke) is one of the best on Long Island. So is <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Ryan">Jimmy Ryan</a>, an All-County player in 2008 who missed nearly all of last season with a back injury. He's back, too. Nick Giampaolo, an All-County midfielder / attack and junior attack Will Mazzone lead the offense.
 Speaking of attack, Smithtown West features one of the best young players on Long Island in sophomore Rob Pannell (40 goals last season). Junior Kyle Keenan (27 goals) is another elite scorer. Wayne Marx (defense) and Brett Madarz (midfield) were All-County last season.
 Connetquot received its highest preseason seed (fourth) in school history and returns big-time players Kieran McArdle (attack), Mike Pellegrino (defense) and Zach Oliveri (goalie).
 Sachem North's potent offense features junior midfield / attack Mike Andreassi (five goals in the upset of West Islip), middie Jake Cabble and attack Phil Schaefer (tying and winning goals against WI). East Islip returns the county's leading goal scorer, Mike Rooney (75) and All-County goalie Tyler Begley. Whitman features the nation's sixth-rated junior recruit, powerful midfielder Myles Jones.
CLASS B
 They dubbed themselves the "Killer Bs" last season and there's some depth and balance again in Division II, where nine of 17 teams qualify for the playoffs. Comsewogue is the top seed and returns four All-County players - midfielders Alex Zomerfield and Tom Cleary and defensemen Brian Michalec and Matt Scalera.
 Perennial power Shoreham-Wading River has a deep, balanced team, led by underclassmen - freshman Tim Rotanz (attack), sophomore defenseman Chris Mahoney and junior attack Connor Drost.
 Sayville, a surprise team last season, lost a lot to graduation but returns All-County attack Dan Mellynchuk and sophomore defenseman Steven Ferreira. Rocky Point is off to a fast start, led by All-County players <a href="/topics/Tom_Kelly">Tom Kelly</a> (midfield) and Pete Vivonetto (attack). Hauppauge features Penn-bound middie Zack Losco, who scored 103 points last season (61 goals). Eastport-South Manor is a playoff team that will make some noise.
CLASS C
 Three of the six "C" teams (who all play in Division II) will qualify for the playoffs. Venerable Mount Sinai coach Joe Cuozzo will retire after the season and didn't appear overly optimistic about adding to his eight state titles (seven with Ward Melville). "We're young and inexperienced," he said. The Mustangs feature junior All-County goalie Matt Poillon.
 Cuozzo said the serious candidates for playoff spots are Babylon, Bayport-Blue Point and Glenn. The Knights feature Dartmouth-bound Austin Cohen.

Suffolk boys lacrosse: West Islip still the best

St. Anthony's began the season as the nation's No. 4-ranked team, according to Inside Lacrosse magazine. Far more important to the Friars, however, is that they are the defending CHSAA champion with an eye on repeating. Having Princeton-bound senior midfielder/attack Tom Schreiber, among others, makes that a distinct possibility. He was the nation's fourth-rated senior recruit, according to the magazine. 
Meanwhile, Chaminade boasts the defensive duo of <a href="/topics/John_Connors">John</a> Urbank and Mike Ehrhardt, and the key for St. John the Baptist is a strong midfield.
 St. Anthony's will also call upon senior middie Brendan Schroeder (Navy Prep), a two-way force, and junior defenseman Greg Danseglio, who has already committed to <a href="/topics/Virginia">Virginia</a>. Senior long-stick midfielder Derek Muzio, a team captain, will go to Stony Brook.
 "We will be strong at the midfield and on defense. We are young, based on playing experience, on attack," said St. Anthony's coach Keith Wieczorek, who said he likes Chaminade's defense.
 Chaminade faces St. Anthony's on April 13 and May 13 in rematches of last season's CHSAA title game, won handily by the Friars, 17-9. The Flyers had won the previous four league championships.
 For Chaminade, the 6-3, 215-pound Urbank is headed to Georgetown, and the 6-4, 220-pound Ehrhardt will attend <a href="/topics/Maryland">Maryland</a>. And not many teams can match up with them. Another big Division I talent on offense is 6-3, 210-pound attack Will Himler (Princeton). He's mainly a feeder who likes to create plays from behind the cage. Junior goalie <a href="/topics/John_Connors">John Connors</a>, a verbal commit to Navy, beings his second season in net for the Flyers. 
 At St. John the Baptist, All-League returnees include midfielder Emmett O'Hara (25 goals, 15 assists) and attack Matthew Scott, who also scored 25 goals.
 Kellenberg returns two-time CHSAA goalie of the year Dan McQuillen and a core of other seniors led by attack Connor McManus and defender Julian Watson.
 Holy Trinity brings back all-league attack Pat Candon, goalie D.J. Mauro and defenseman Frank Mauro. Nick Ferreiro and Nick Susko are versatile players in the midfield and on attack.

Boys lacrosse players to watch

Round up the usual suspects.
Defending champions Farmingdale, Garden City and Manhasset are once again favored to take home the Nassau girls lacrosse crowns. Last season's runners-up, <a href="/topics/Massapequa%2C_NY">Massapequa</a>, <a href="/topics/Wantagh%2C_NY">Wantagh</a> and North Shore, again lead the early contenders.
The question for 2010 becomes who, if anyone, can challenge the status quo? Teams such as <a href="/topics/Port_Washington%2C_NY">Port Washington</a>, <a href="/topics/Hicksville%2C_NY">Hicksville</a> and <a href="/topics/Oceanside%2C_NY">Oceanside</a> in Class A; South Side and Calhoun in B and <a href="/topics/Cold_Spring_Harbor%2C_NY">Cold Spring Harbor</a> and Friends Academy in C certainly have the talent to crash the county finals party. But will the top teams be welcoming new guests?
CLASS A
Farmingdale won its first state title and finished last season ranked No. 1 in the country, according to Lacrosse Magazine. Division I-bound seniors Melanie Raso and Alyssa Cardillo lead a lightning-quick attack that also features Jamie Leone and Kyra Ochwat. Kelly McPartland leads a strong midfield. The defense is all new, as is junior goalie Alexandra Gurecki.
 Massapequa is rebuilding but the Chiefs have a great feeder system and coaching, so they will not be down for long. Sophomore Rory Sadoff is the only returning starter on attack. Classmate Kelsey O'Brien should help on offense. Senior defender Jackie Tierney provides leadership.
 Oceanside is strong on offense with returning seniors Justine Clark, Lauren Schlitt and Amanda Thorner. All-Conference senior Tina Pumo leads the defense.
 Kate Culhane, Shannon McDonald and Brittney Hoehing have done the early scoring for county semifinalist Hicksville.
 Port Washington opened the season with four straight wins behind cousins Alexa and Jackie Froccaro.
CLASS B
Garden City is setting its sights on a fifth straight state title. The Trojans have 12 seniors, including Division I-bound captains Shannon Mangini (Penn), Mariah Pewarski (<a href="/topics/Harvard_University">Harvard</a>) and Shannon Defliese (UMass). Mangini teams with juniors Mikaela Rix, Barbara Sullivan and sophomore Catherine Dickinson for one of L.I.'s best midfields. Pewarski and Defliese lead the defense in front of junior goalie Kelly Weis.
 Perpetually chasing Garden City is Wantagh. The Warriors' core is a talented junior class led by All-County attack Paula Schmidt, who has a great eye for the goal. Juniors April Ianetta, Colleen Lovett and goalie Kelly Keenan, who takes over for her sister Katie, also will have an impact. Attack Jackie Sileo and defender Meaghan Smith are senior leaders.
 South Side moves up to Conference I and would like to slip into the county final. Sam Morin and Jackie Cifarelli lead a dangerous offense and goaltender Kelsey Gregerson is one of L.I.'s best.
 Calhoun has had early scoring from Diandra Hanna, Ava Fitzgerald and Erin Green and should be in the semifinal mix. Division lost seven seniors from its county semifinalist, but has plenty of athletes. The core of the team is juniors Christina Rea, Taylor Malings and Julie Ballantyne.
 <a href="/topics/Plainedge%2C_NY">Plainedge</a> could be the surprise in Conference II. Sophomore Kathleen Kennedy had four goals and two assists in a victory over Calhoun.
CLASS C
Manhasset is looking for its seventh straight county title. Kerri Fleishhacker sets up the offense. Helping her up front will be sophomore Halle Majorana and junior Jenny Vlahos. Defense will be a strength. Holy Cross-bound senior Maggie Reichenbach and juniors Meg Markham and Cara Cappellini will help out Gettysburg-bound goalie Jen Levy.
 North Shore graduated only three seniors from the 2009 county semifinalists. Senior Kathleen Lennon has great stick skills and leads the attack. Lauren Janelli and Amanda Johansen highlight the midfield. Quick senior goalie Kristen Jovanello returns.
 Cold Spring Harbor is tough on offense, with Victoria Kotowski and Elizabeth Ludlow, and defense with Michelle Abramczyk and goalie Colleen Nofi.
 Friends Academy with Meredith Mangiarotti and Kelsey Denihan, <a href="/topics/Mineola%2C_NY">Mineola</a> with Samantha Stavish and Kerry and Kalie Medlock and <a href="/topics/Carle_Place%2C_NY">Carle Place</a> with Taylor Martello and Alice Dawson, should be playoff teams.

Stick skills, field vision, speed, shooting accuracy and . . . poetry? 
Yes, West Babylon's lady lacrosse players are flexing their literary muscles this season, as players are giving an oration of their favorite inspirational poem before every game. So far it's working, with the Eagles winning their first five games by a combined 84-28.
"It's not like some little girlie poem," said Eagles All-American Alyssa Murray, who will likely be the state's all-time assists leader by next week. "We're a real deep team. Little things like that are symbolic."
CLASS A
 By deep, she meant philosophical, but West Babylon, the preseason favorite, also has depth in a tangible sense with seven senior starters. All-County attack Samantha Rush is generally the beneficiary of Murray's passes, and Rutgers-bound Holly DiMuro anchors a stout defense.
 DiMuro is likely to be given the unenviable task of stopping All-American Shannon Gilroy of defending county champion Northport, the Eagles' top contender, when they meet April 30. Flanking Gilroy for the Tigers is diminutive attack Courtney Fortunato, a 70-goal scorer last season, and Megan Marinelli is the last line of defense in front of two-year starting goalie Michaela Aymong.
 Northwestern-bound middie Alyssa Leonard leads the Bay Shore charge, along with Shelby Vaccaro (Sacred Heart) and All-County defender Marissa O'Meally.
 West Islip netminder Alyssa Costantino (<a href="/topics/Syracuse">Syracuse</a>) is the foundation of the Lions' defense, and Stefani Jackson and Devan Crimi, who will remain teammates at Adelphi next season, pace the offense.
 Bria Hartley and Nicole Marzocca lead North Babylon, Octavia Williams paces Floyd, and <a href="/topics/Florida">Florida</a>-bound Kelsey Dlugos is the go-to girl for Commack.
 Lindenhurst, piloted by Kelsey Russo, and Ward Melville, behind goalie Jen Walsh and Jess Liberty on attack, will also be in the Division I hunt. 
CLASS B
 Looking to reclaim its perch atop Class B, which it had for three straight seasons before Sayville took it away last year, Rocky Point returns an 86-goal scorer in All-American Kara Mupo. Sam Mazzeo should return from an ACL injury this week to bolster the offense, which gets fed by midfielder Caitlin Gargan.
 Sayville returns nine of 12 starters from last year's county title team, including All-County performers <a href="/topics/Jordan">Jordan</a> Lite and Emily Meier, both midfielders, and goalie Heather Bonamico, who will enter the Navy upon graduation. Eastport-South Manor is up-and-coming with Stony Brook-bound attack Tara Gerstacker, an honorable mention All-American, and seventh-grader Samantha Giacolone in net.
 Hauppauge returns scorers Jennifer Porretto and Taylor Ranftle, Jamie Romano provides instant offense for Kings Park, and Emily Pugliese leads Huntington.Islip brings back Kara Rafferty and Kerri Nicolich.
CLASS C
 Though rich in talent, Suffolk has had just one team win a state title - Shoreham-Wading River, which is the three-time defending "C'' champ. A pair of 50-goal scorers, All-Americans Kait Brosco (midfield) and Jen DeVito (attack), return for the Wildcats. <a href="/topics/Harvard_University">Harvard</a>-bound Chelsey Newman joins Brosco in the midfield, and Erin McMullan, who'll join DeVito at Yale next year, is an experienced and talented netminder. Shoreham-Wading River took a hit with the loss of Corinne Wiederkehr, a tall attack who tore her ACL playing basketball and is out for the season.
 Mount Sinai, behind Shannon Burns and Rachel Dillon, Glenn, led by Princeton-bound Mary-Kate Sivilli and Bayport-Blue Point, paced by Loren Generi, will challenge Shoreham-Wading River. Center Moriches is playing its inaugural season.

Suffolk girls lacrosse: West Babylon's poetic justice

St. Anthony's isn't going to duck anyone this season. 
Dates with defending state Class A champion Farmingdale and Suffolk Class B finalist Rocky Point remain on a tough non-league slate for the Friars. And that's after they made a statement in a 15-7 win over West Islip on April 3. 
The two-time defending Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA champion St. Anthony's returns a solid group of scorers in Annie Heagerty, Darcy Messina and Maggie Bill, while Haley Bloom serves as the facilitator in the offense. Tori <a href="/topics/Holland">Holland</a> is solid in net, and Shanna Brady heads the defense. St. Anthony's also appears to have plenty of fight. 
After the win over West Islip, Brady said: "We know how talented we are. Watch out. We're St. Anthony's and we're ready to play." 
Sacred Heart is young but has experience, as seven of the 11 starters are sophomores. Becky Conto leads the midfield and Meaghan Breen is the backbone of the attack. Aileen Carey and Taylor Higgins anchor the defense with Lauren Bonagura, the only senior starter. Another upperclassman who will have an impact is junior Kristen Brent, an aggressive midfielder. 
St. John the Baptist returns 50-goal scorers Danielle Jaycox and Erin Collins, both junior midfielders, and despite early-season losses to Sacred Heart and St. Anthony's, coach Janine Pirone believes her team is poised to take a step forward. 
"We do have a lot of skill," Pirone said. "We've just got to put it all together." 
Our Lady of Mercy returns standout Heather Russell, and Katie Cunningham leads Kellenberg. 
INDEPENDENT 
Portledge fell in overtime of last season's NYSAIS championship. It was the first time in school history it reached the NYSAIS final. Portledge will again be very strong on the midfield with seniors Addie Reilly, Claudia Rogers and <a href="/topics/Chelsea_F.C.">Chelsea</a> Caracciolo. The entire starting defense returns, including senior Monique Kelly.

Suffolk girls lacrosse players to watch

There's no need to look further than last year's playoffs to find the two most tightly contested races in Nassau.
While Class AA and A champs <a href="/topics/Massapequa%2C_NY">Massapequa</a> and Clarke continue to demonstrate their long-established ability to reload year after year, the superlative individual talents at MacArthur and Island Trees may just be enough to upend the baseball giants.
 
CLASS AA
 There's heavy buzz around MacArthur (19-4-2), which returns All-State pitcher Frankie Vanderka and shortstop Nick McQuail. The Generals are looking to regroup after a disappointing postseason; a favored MacArthur came into the playoffs as the first seed but fell to fourth-seeded Carey in the semifinals.
 MacArthur boasts a deep rotation, led by Vanderka, who clocks in the mid-to-upper 80s and can throw four pitches for strikes. Vanderka, McQuail (.500 OPB), and Mike Scro (.410) are a potent combination.
 Despite this, Massapequa (22-8) remains the favorite. The Chiefs have strong pitching, led by All-State righty Joe Lipari, but will need veterans like all-league first basemen Rob Veltre to set the tone.
 Carey ascended to the big show after dominating AA-II in 2009 and defeating No. 1 MacArthur in the semifinals. With the likes of John Daddino, the staff ace who notched a no-hitter against Mepham, and Kyle DeMeo (17 RBIs, 14 stolen bases), the Seahawks will be competitive.
 <a href="/topics/Bellmore%2C_NY">Bellmore</a>-Kennedy returns stronger on the back of big lefty Kevin Archibald, while <a href="/topics/East_Meadow%2C_NY">East Meadow</a> pitcher Max Schonfeld (7-0) and Mepham slugger J.C. Brandmaier (.415, 6 HRs) no doubt will give their teams an edge.
 <a href="/topics/Plainview%2C_NY">Plainview</a> JFK is strong in AA-II with an abundance of talent, including <a href="/topics/Manhattan">Manhattan</a>-bound pitcher Kevin Bonanni and catcher Chris Caldari. <a href="/topics/Port_Washington%2C_NY">Port Washington</a> (16-2) continues its metamorphosis into a good team, led by Everett Keller (8-1, 71 Ks) and shortstop David Podlofsky. <a href="/topics/Syosset%2C_NY">Syosset</a> isn't to be discounted with five-tool shortstop Mitch Hollander. <a href="/topics/Herricks%2C_NY">Herricks</a> returns 10 seniors.
CLASS A
Island Trees (20-6-2) is led by strong pitching and Diamond Award-winner Bryan Verbitsky. He is a heavy-hitting outfielder with a professional-grade slider. Verbitsky, Brandon Garcia (0.82 WHIP) and Dan Bartlett (5-0, 1.17 ERA) comprise a three-ace rotation.

 <a href="/topics/Elmont%2C_NY">Elmont</a> hopes to move away from a difficult season in A-III and returns an improved pitching staff, and <a href="/topics/Great_Neck%2C_NY">Great Neck</a> North also has a slew of senior pitching. <a href="/topics/Westbury%2C_NY">Westbury</a> is growing and might surprise behind Nick Arevalo (.365) and the burgeoning talent of pitcher Billy Casseus.

The Frogs will try to hold off <a href="/topics/Cold_Spring_Harbor%2C_NY">Cold Spring Harbor</a>.<a href="/topics/East_Rockaway%2C_NY">East Rockaway</a> will hope to challenge <a href="/topics/Oyster_Bay%2C_NY">Oyster Bay</a> in Class C, helmed by <a href="/topics/David_Hobbs">David Hobbs</a> (1.77 ERA, 62 Ks). Edvardas Matusevicius threw his first pitch and Islip baseball coach Pete Blumenauer was expressionless. A few more pitches and Blumenauer became more animated. The righthander had more than enough on his fastball and plenty of snap in his curve. Moreover, the 6-1, 185-pound Lithuanian exchange student joins an already polished pitching staff and an experienced Islip club that has won three consecutive Suffolk Class A championships.
CLASS A
 "It's a tremendous surprise when someone comes in unexpected and they can play," Blumenauer said of Matusevicius. "Our strength was in our pitching and he just slides right into the rotation. He's an all-around excellent athlete."
 Matusevicius joins Iona-bound Eddie Macaluso, who has 17 career wins and had a 1.02 ERA as a junior. Macaluso is a crafty lefty, keeps batters off-balance and has great location. Senior lefty Matt Espinal, a four-year starter who also plays centerfield, has a big curveball and will fill the other spot in the starting rotation.
 "It's never easy when <a href="/topics/Hauppauge%2C_NY">Hauppauge</a> and <a href="/topics/Eastport%2C_NY">Eastport</a>-South Manor are both in our league," Blumenauer said. "Those are six tough league games."
 Junior infielder R.J. Going, who hit .343 with 20 RBIs, and senior catcher Stephen Provenzano, who hit .370, will key the Islip offense.
 Hauppauge reeled off a school-record 22 wins in 2009 and the Eagles bring back senior Tim Trimarchi, a a three-year starter, who was 7-2 with a 2.93 ERA, and senior Derek Labarbera, who was 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA. "Our lineup will put a lot of pressure on opposing pitchers," coach Kevin Giachetti said. "We're deep offensively. It's a struggle to get playing time for some of our guys. Our bench will have plenty of depth."
 The Eagles' balanced lineup starts with senior catcher Matt Reistetter, who is Hofstra-bound and was the League V MVP and an All-<a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> selection who batted .557 with 49 hits. Senior first baseman/catcher Steve Dill had 34 RBIs and batted .410 last season. Senior leftfielder Angelo Biondo had six home runs and senior shortstop Bobby Vitulano batted .395 in the leadoff spot.
 <a href="/topics/Shoreham%2C_NY">Shoreham</a>-<a href="/topics/Wading_River%2C_NY">Wading River</a> in League VI will contend for the county title. Senior righty Jim Luppens, who committed to Canisius, is one of Long Island's top power hitters.
 <a href="/topics/Sayville%2C_NY">Sayville</a> coach Ryan Cox developed a young core of players who won seven straight games late in the season to reach the playoffs for the sixth straight time. CLASS AA
<a href="/topics/Lindenhurst%2C_NY">Lindenhurst</a>, which hasn't won a county crown since 1963, is loaded with experience. Senior first baseman Jon McGibbon, junior shortstop Steve Skon and senior outfielder Jimmy Briggs, who led Long Island with 13 home runs and 33 RBIs as a junior, give Lindy an intimidating lineup. <a href="/topics/Gonzaga_Bulldogs">The Bulldogs</a> dropped into League II, where Connetquot, the defending champion, returns three All-County outfielders in seniors Kenny Jackson and Joey Russo and junior Jimmy Guiliano.
 The team to watch is <a href="/topics/Longwood%2C_NY">Longwood</a>. The Lions have senior J.J. Bessel on the mound and a bevy of hitting. They had seven players homer in the League I opener. 
 "Don't count us out," Half Hollow Hills West coach Tom Migliozzi said. "We'll be right there at the end." Colts ace T.J. Pecoraro could hook up with <a href="/topics/Smithtown%2C_NY">Smithtown</a> West's Anthony Gatto, the League IV player of the year, in an interesting showdown.

Suffolk baseball: Islip is loaded in Class A

Shortstop Brandon Stahl joked with leftfielder Derek Hirsch and it seemed to loosen up the entire bench. The laughter reverberated out to the basepaths, where coaches Chris Tranchina and Paul Parsolano were about to orchestrate a seven-run sixth inning outburst against the Rock Bridge Bruins of <a href="/topics/Missouri">Missouri</a>.
 Trailing by by run at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., St. Dominic still seemed in control. This was spring training at its finest. It was players having fun, staying loose and preparing for the CHSAA season.
 "It's a good feeling when you put together a winning program," said Stahl, the Bayhawks captain who is committed to Old Dominion. "We've been in the championship series two years in a row."
St. Dominic came back for a 14-8 win over Rock Bridge and set the tone for a productive spring trip. The Bayhawks are no longer one of the CHSAA's doormats. It's no surprise that the league defending champions are brimming with confidence.
 "Winning the school's first league championship did wonders for us," St. Dominic coach Rick Garrett said. "It felt like we finally arrived."
 Major league teams have tapped three Bayhawks in the past five years in the June amateur draft. No other program on Long Island can boast those kind of numbers.
 The trip to Florida gave his players the chance to bond socially as well as on the field. The defending champions were 20-10 last season and earned the playoff title after finishing second during the regular season to St. John the Baptist.
 The offense has senior leftfielder Derek Hirsch, one of Long Island's most dangerous hitters. He opened his season with two line-drive doubles against Rock Bridge. The Bayhawks are bolstered by the return of lefthanded centerfielder Steve Goldstein, who's back from <a href="/topics/Tommy_John">Tommy John</a> surgery, and junior second baseman Tommy Grillo.
 The speed of Grillo and Stahl will give Hirsch and Goldstein plenty of run-producing opportunities. The trick to winning another CHSAA title can be found on the mound with hard-throwing junior righthander Nick Batas, a 6-1, 200-pounder, who had a 1.95 ERA; senior Chris Dragone and junior lefty Robert Galligan, a 6-4, 210-pounder.
 St. John the Baptist has league MVP Kevin Courtney, who is the ace of a staff that includes hard-throwing righthanders Brian Hunter and Tom O'Neill. The Cougars won the regular-season title last year before falling short in the playoffs.
 Holy Trinity has an experienced staff led by Villanova-bound Maximo Almonte and Sachim Kirtane, who will attend <a href="/topics/George_Mason">George Mason</a>. The addition of sophomore lefty Christian Colletti gives coach Bob Malandro a fine rotation. Senior third baseman Anthony Brunetti, who has been converted to catcher, led the Titans in hitting the past three years.
 Chaminade catcher Casey Cunningham will handle an experienced staff led by lefty Mike Martin. The Flyers are high on junior second baseman Tom Roulis.
 St. Anthony's will rely on righthanders Michael Dolce and Anthony Eichhorn to get into the playoff mix.
 St. Mary's is led by junior catcher Alex Falconi. Kellenberg had 15 players graduate, leaving the Firebirds young and inexperienced.

Carey - a county finalist last season - is the top seed and returns seven starters, led by all-county pitchers Patti Callahan (1.12 ERA) and Nicole Turato, and bolstered by shortstop Brianne Catalano and outfielder Jessica Doria. 
CLASS AA
<a href="/topics/East_Meadow%2C_NY">East Meadow</a>,the No. 2-seed, returns most of last year's squad ("plenty of familiar faces'' coach Cindy McCarthy said), and is led by pitcher Lindsay McKillop. She, along with first baseman Jamie Laird, shortstop Hillary Hoffman, Rachel <a href="/topics/Sydney">Sydney</a> and catcher Brittany Anghel, a transfer from St. Dominic, head the roster. Long Beach graduated All-State pitcher Kelly Jansen, but the Marines should be potent with catcher Sidney Folk (.440) and shortstop Haley Birnbaum, a former All-Long Islander who hit .340 in 2009 while battling shoulder tendonitis. Now healthy, she'll be the No. 1 pitcher. <a href="/topics/Farmingdale%2C_NY">Farmingdale</a> made the jump from Conference III to I with the addition of star pitcher Isabella Corrao, a St. Dominic transfer. <a href="/topics/Oceanside%2C_NY">Oceanside</a>, which features shortstop Samantha Ray, should be among the elite. Nicole Schieferstein, Erica Fischetti (.391), Vicky Wink, Gabby Nicholson and pitcher Erika Nogan lead the Vikings. <a href="/topics/Plainedge%2C_NY">Plainedge</a> could be on the rise with the pitcher/shortstop and co-player of the year Michelle Daubman. Bay Shore, an annual playoff participant since 1983, is led by pitchers Liz Weber and Taylor McGowan. Cat Franzone should headline the offense. Bianca Kranz (7-4, 0.79) stands out for Connetquot, which could make noise in the playoffs.
LEAGUE III
 Rachel Dell'Orto will share the circle with Courtney Blake, and how well the two new pitchers throw could determine East Islip's season. <a href="/topics/Dana_White">Dana White</a> (.470, 31 RBIs), Colleen Smith and Michelle McKinnon (.460, 12 stolen bases) are big-time bats. If Lauren Jacaruso (eight wins, 104 strikeouts) can take the next step for <a href="/topics/West_Islip%2C_NY">West Islip</a>, this race could be a dogfight. After making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years in 2009, all-league shortstop Jackie Binstock (.369 average) and all-league hurler Cassie Martinez (1.71 ERA) look to take <a href="/topics/Centereach%2C_NY">Centereach</a> to the next level.
LEAGUE IV
Deer Park returns its entire lineup, which finished 12th in the county in average and 10th in runs. Marie Racano (.360, 17 RBIs) and Melissa McGibney (.420, 12 RBIs) headline. Half Hollow Hills West also has a deep lineup, led by pitcher Alyssa Bitsimis (.423, 12 RBIs). Taylor Webb takes over in the circle for <a href="/topics/West_Babylon%2C_NY">West Babylon</a>. <a href="/topics/Smithtown%2C_NY">Smithtown</a> West has made the playoffs 22 straight years, but has a younger team. <a href="/topics/Riverhead%2C_NY">Riverhead</a> pitcher Julia Morrow will make things tough for opponents.
LEAGUE V
 Ace pitcher <a href="/topics/Lindsay_Taylor">Lindsay Taylor</a>, Megan McGinley (.392, 28 RBIs) and Jessica Julich (.519, 25 RBIs) are keys for Kings Park. Nicole Ehlinger (18-6, 1.14 ERA) and Sandy Hawthorne make Hauppauge dangerous, and Catherine Havens (12-3, 1.23 ERA) and Brianna Clarke (.456) are standouts at <a href="/topics/Eastport%2C_NY">Eastport</a>-South Manor, back in Class A after making the AA playoffs in 2009.
LEAGUE VI
 O'Connor hit .495, slugged .600 and was 17-for-18 in stolen bases for Miller Place last season and is off to a fast start so far this spring. <a href="/topics/East_Hampton%2C_NY">East Hampton</a> and <a href="/topics/Westhampton%2C_NY">Westhampton</a> are also in the mix.
LEAGUE VII
 Senior Amanda McKay (.413, 34 RBIs) returns in the circle for Babylon, which lost in the Class B final. If pitcher Tiana Giuliano is healthy, this team could dominate. Danielle Parente hit .450 for <a href="/topics/Mount_Sinai%2C_NY">Mount Sinai</a>, which will try to defend its league title with a younger squad. <a href="/topics/Hampton_Bays%2C_NY">Hampton Bays</a>, Class B champ in 2009, has a new pitcher in Emily Cortese.
LEAGUE VIII
 Class C defending champion Port Jefferson is led by sophomore pitcher Michiko McGivney.

Suffolk softball: Commack is team to beat

Once dominated by pitching, the CHSAA could see an explosion in offense this season, partly because of key departures, but also because of a major rule change.
The league's three best pitchers are gone: St. John the Baptist lost Olivia Galati to graduation, as did Holy Trinity with Megan Butterworth, and All-Long Islander Isabella Corrao transferred from St. Dominic to Farmingdale. In addition, the CHSAA agreed to move the pitching circle from 40 feet back to 43 feet.
"That's obviously going to affect the pitching," Holy Trinity coach Denise Desantis said. "I think going forward, it's going to be more about offense and which teams are most solid all-around."
Added Kellenberg coach Ken Conrade: "There's going to be tremendous parity in the league and everything is up for grabs . . . Now it will really be a team game."
St. Anthony's has a very young group, returning only four players from last season. Michelle Carbone is emerging as a good pitcher early this season, but the Friars will be employing a "hitting by committee" approach for the most part. Nicole Parkas, a returning all-league third baseman, is a patient hitter and Joanna Chalifoux is a power-hitting lefty catcher.
St. John the Baptist, the defending state champion, has a major hole to fill with the graduation of Galati. Erin Caputo, 5-0 last season, is capable. Offensively, the scrappy Cougars will play small ball.
Holy Trinity, which lost in the semifinals to St. John the Baptist, will be in the mix with third baseman Avree Morton. Junior pitcher Kayla Rizzi, who was 6-1, replaces Butterworth.
Kellenberg, which finished tied for third in the league, returns senior pitcher Emily Barnable and infielder Victoria Sindone (.436 on-base percentage), and added shortstop Jaqueline Marino, who will bat third.
St. Dominic, which reached the final, will also be without catcher Brianny Anghel (transfer to East Meadow). First baseman Molly Geary and centerfielder Sabrina Gordek will lead the offense and sophomore Brianna Losquardo will take the circle. Sacred Heart will also be competitive. Our Lady of Mercy is a team on the rise.

Boys track athletes to watch

Adam Epstein was hobbled by an ankle injury suffered in Game 3 of a grueling marathon disguised as a volleyball game, but had no intention of sitting out. If Port Washington was going down in the Class A finals for the second year running, Epstein, the team tri-captain and middle hitter, would have the same view he'd had all season: front and center.
Port Washington lost the five-game match against <a href="/topics/Plainview%2C_NY">Plainview</a> JFK, and Epstein, said coach Maria Giamanco, well, "he left everything on the court."
You'll have to excuse the Pirates if they're a little hungry.
CLASS A
In fact, Port Washington returns famished. The Vikings haven't won a title since 1999 and have the best talent in the county in Epstein and fellow captains Daniel Bernstein (outside hitter) and Sung Kim (setter). It's a well-managed and mature attack that will make a legitimate run.
The biggest threats remain Plainview JFK, <a href="/topics/Massapequa%2C_NY">Massapequa</a> and <a href="/topics/Long_Beach%2C_NY">Long Beach</a>. 
Plainview JFK returns with middle blocker Steven Coniglio, who, at 6-4, is its most intimidating presence. The team has five starting seniors, along with junior Greg Rankel, who brings a strong serve to a defense-minded crew that is three deep in libero. Challenging them is Massapequa, with four starters over 6-3.
Long Beach was dealt a devastating blow last year with the injury of outside hitter <a href="/topics/Nick_Smith">Nick Smith</a>. The senior is a game-changer and returns to a team that has an improved backcourt defense and serve receive. He's supported by All-Conference setter Jon Yunger (614 assists, 148 digs and 20 aces). <a href="/topics/East_Meadow%2C_NY">East Meadow</a> brings back three All-Conference players, and <a href="/topics/Herricks%2C_NY">Herricks</a> hopes to continue its run of making the playoffs 21 of the last 22 seasons. Calhoun will look to improve tactically and ride a strong middle attack and All-Conference outside hitter Alex Morra. <a href="/topics/Uniondale%2C_NY">Uniondale</a> comes back strong with outside hitter Jason Mascoe.
CLASS B
<a href="/topics/Bellmore%2C_NY">Bellmore</a> JFK returns nine players from its championship team. <a href="/topics/Jericho%2C_NY">Jericho</a> will likely be the main competition. The team finished second in the conference and returns nine players and three All-Conference, including outside hitter Jason Wang.
<a href="/topics/Floral_Park%2C_NY">Floral Park</a> will also be strong, thanks to All-County opposite-side hitter Shaan Afridi and a sizable, well-balanced attack. <a href="/topics/Garden_City%2C_NY">Garden City</a> has a strong defense, and <a href="/topics/Valley_Stream%2C_NY">Valley Stream</a> North may surprise; they have 13 seniors and could be trouble for more established teams. 
CHSAA
St. Anthony's won it all against St. John the Baptist and is off to a strong start this year, winning the Uniondale Invitational. St. Anthony's is young, but returns two key starters in setter Lee Vasilakos and hitter Scott Van Duyne. Look for St. John the Baptist, coming off its best year in school history, and Chaminade to challenge.
Chaminade has two strong setters and an overpowering back-row attack, and Baptist returns setter Nick Licari. St. Francis Prep also comes back better after a difficult season.

CONFERENCE 1A
 For one day last season, Cold Spring Harbor was on a level playing field with the rest of <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a>.
 Their regular starters were replaced by departing seniors in honor of senior recognition day and it resulted in their only loss of the season.
 A nearly unbeatable team that has won two straight Long Island championships added more talent than it lost. All-State junior Eric Ambrosio is an aggressive baseliner but is not afraid to attack the net. Sophomore Josh Levine has lost only one match in two years. Conor Dauer will be tough to beat at third singles. Jensen Reiter and Alex Tropiano join forces for a chance to win in doubles at states.
 <a href="/topics/Jericho%2C_NY">Jericho</a>'s strength will be at singles, where senior <a href="/topics/Brandon_Lee">Brandon Lee</a> will be joined by newcomer Sam Lam, a highly ranked USTA freshman who could make an impact.
 <a href="/topics/Syosset%2C_NY">Syosset</a> has a young team that could surprise behind Kevin Katz and Stephen Peng.
 For <a href="/topics/Port_Washington%2C_NY">Port Washington</a>, Jason Hubsher handles first singles and Ben Spivack and Luke Record are yet to lose a match as they enter their fourth year playing doubles.
 Alex Friedlich tops a strong singles unit for <a href="/topics/Great_Neck%2C_NY">Great Neck</a> North that also includes Paul Abadescu, a sophomore with upside.
 Great Neck South faces a difficult task with no returning singles players but has a young team with a lot of parity.
CONFERENCE 1B
 <a href="/topics/Roslyn%2C_NY">Roslyn</a> is led by Austin Blau, a lefty with beautiful ground strokes, and Alexander Werman, who is coming off a respectable showing in the counties.
 It's hard to get a ball past Friends Academy sophomore Andrew Yaraghi, who along with junior John Defrancesch, finished third in the state in doubles.
 <a href="/topics/Long_Beach%2C_NY">Long Beach</a> features two top players with different styles in Eric Rubin, who prefers to play from the baseline, and Matty Berry, who attacks the net. 
 <a href="/topics/Hewlett%2C_NY">Hewlett</a> features a more experienced group this season but their strength is at first singles with the solid serve-and-volley game of JJ Tauil.
 Wheatley has a pair of steady players in Ben Freeberg and Zach Lessen but is a young team that might be a year away from a deep run.
 South Side rode a strong doubles lineup that went 48-0 to an undefeated season in Conference 2. Returning doubles players include Matt Cope, Jessie Weiss, and Craig Shelley.
 Conference 1 may be the only conference that competes for the Long Island championship, but there is individual talent outside of the conference that could threaten in counties and states. None more so than <a href="/topics/Garden_City%2C_NY">Garden City</a>'s Zach Morris, who finished second in the county last season, and <a href="/topics/Plainview%2C_NY">Plainview</a> JFK's Corey Morgenstem, who has lost just four matches in three years.

Chaminade, winner of four straight league titles and 25 of the last 30, hasn't lost a league match in three years and counting behind twins Pat and Chris Brosnan. Chris, the league singles champion, is a counterpuncher and Pat, who finished third, is a serve-and-volleyer. 
St. Anthony's adds a player with few weaknesses in freshman John D'Alessandro. Joseph Ziccardi takes over first singles for league runner-up St. John the Baptist.

Suffolk boys tennis players to watch

LEAGUE I
 While senior Robert O'Connell carefully plans his way around obstacles on the golf course, sophomore Kyle Morris drives his way over them. O'Connell's approach and the power game of Morris will be pivotal in bringing a sixth straight League I title to Deer Park. 
 They hope to fend off Matt Gorman and Quinn Dunkak of co-league champion <a href="/topics/Northport%2C_NY">Northport</a>, which returns all starters and has the talent and depth to win the league outright.
 <a href="/topics/Islip%2C_NY">Islip</a> hopes to build on the team and individual success it experienced last year after producing its first individual county champion in Christian Dolan. 
LEAGUE II
 The competition shudders to think of what Frank Amicizia can accomplish this season. After leading <a href="/topics/Kings_Park%2C_NY">Kings Park</a> to a county championship last year, he tied for 14th at states for <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a>'s best finish - as a sophomore.
 Kings Park seems primed for a repeat but will be challenged by a deep Sachem East team, led by Ryan Mullins, and an experienced <a href="/topics/Hauppauge%2C_NY">Hauppauge</a> team that includes All-County senior Andrew Maung.

CONFERENCE I
 After losing three starters, sophomore Matt Hirsch (7-2-1, 39.71 stroke average) and lone senior Casey Epstein (5-3-2, 39.90) take over the top two spots for Lynbrook, the defending Conference I champ.
 <a href="/topics/Hewlett%2C_NY">Hewlett</a> will be in contention behind a formidable tandem of Taylor Heath and Austin Huth. Mepham is rebuilding but features Adam Larkin, who is solid from the tee to green and will bid for a county title and a return to state play.
CONFERENCE II
 It's a mix of experience and youth at the top for <a href="/topics/Jericho%2C_NY">Jericho</a> with senior Austin Landow (6-2-1, 41.7) and freshman Sahil Iyer (5-2, 41.4) hoping to lead a deep team to another undefeated conference season. Peter Scialbba and <a href="/topics/Jordan">Jordan</a> Woldenberg of Friends Academy will stand in the way.
CONFERENCE III
 Jonathan Farber leads an experienced unit at <a href="/topics/Plainview%2C_NY">Plainview</a> JFK that hopes to overcome a <a href="/topics/Port_Washington%2C_NY">Port Washington</a> team that was unbeaten until a four-stroke loss to <a href="/topics/Farmingdale%2C_NY">Farmingdale</a> in the county championship. Kelly Shon may not be as long off the tee as her male counterparts, but she makes up for it with her short game and should take Port Washington deep into the counties. 
 
CHSAA
 The top five finishers in last season's individual league tournament were members of Chaminade, the defending NSCHSAA champion. League MVP Bobby Keating and his 36-stroke average leads the group, and tournament winner, John Reali, is the number two.
 Christian Greco and St. Anthony's pose an annual threat. Kellenberg, featuring a solid all-around sophomore in Nick Anding, will be young but competitive.

Boys golf: Deer Park, Lynbrook are top dogs

WEST DIVISION
 In addition to their Maroon team that has gone undefeated in <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> for the past six seasons and has won three of the last four <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> championships, Garden City also has what could be considered a "minor league'' team at the varsity level. 
 The White team gives Garden City golfers who didn't make the Maroon cut a chance to qualify for the county tournament. The school is so rich in talent that the team finished second in the division and fourth in the counties last season.
 Its "major league'' affiliate returns five starters that finished in the top 18 at counties last year. With senior captain Erica Gambardella's short game and eighth-grader Sam Sessa's ability to hit fairways, a three-peat seems inevitable for Maroon.
 Sewanhaka District will progress as Casey Durant, who drives the ball to distances that shouldn't be reached by an eighth-grader, continues to improve.
EAST DIVISION
<a href="/topics/Syosset%2C_NY">Syosset</a> will be Garden City's biggest threat in Nassau behind a pair of All-County golfers in state qualifier Rohini Rudra, who showed great accuracy last season, and senior Tara Petruzillo, who added distance in the offseason.
SOUTH DIVISION
<a href="/topics/Jericho%2C_NY">Jericho</a>'s depth, led by the all-around game of Shannon Chadha, makes it the preseason favorite. <a href="/topics/Locust_Valley%2C_NY">Locust Valley</a> sophomore Amanda West is only getting better, especially off the tee.

LEAGUE I
 The <a href="/topics/Hauppauge%2C_NY">Hauppauge</a> golf program has been turned around by a talented group of seniors that includes Joyce Adams and Monica Yi. But co-league champ <a href="/topics/Bay_Shore%2C_NY">Bay Shore</a> may thwart any further progress with an imposing duo of Jessica Downs and Ali Hoffman. 
 Julie Flaherty leads an up-and-coming <a href="/topics/West_Islip%2C_NY">West Islip</a> team and <a href="/topics/West_Babylon%2C_NY">West Babylon</a> has a potential state qualifier in Emily Toner.
LEAGUE II
 The favorite in <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a>'s toughest league is <a href="/topics/Smithtown%2C_NY">Smithtown</a> West, which has won two straight county championships and could add many more with freshman Victoria Snak in the number one spot. League co-champion Smithtown East returns its entire team, led by junior Katie Fitzharris. 
<a href="/topics/Commack%2C_NY">Commack</a> has added depth to complement its two-time state champion Suzie Lee. Half Hollow Hills West features two-time state qualifier Michelle Rosenhouse, who will outdrive most competition. <a href="/topics/Northport%2C_NY">Northport</a>'s Krissy Unger and Cameron Lambertson are each coming off strong showings in states. 
LEAGUE III
 Undefeated league champ <a href="/topics/Mount_Sinai%2C_NY">Mount Sinai</a> will have a senior at each starting position, the most consistent of which is Elizabeth Delio. Laura Yasson leads a solid top three for Ward <a href="/topics/Melville%2C_NY">Melville</a>.
LEAGUE IV
<a href="/topics/Sayville%2C_NY">Sayville</a> will challenge for a county championship with a dangerous trio of seniors in Jenn Clinton, Julie MacDonnell and Cynthia Cheng.

Boys and girls golfers to watch

It's a birdie . . . it's a

Smithtown East boys 
badminton team.
 
Ending the regular season with a 14-0 record last season, the Smithtown East boys were the supermen of <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a>. Returning three of their top five singles players, junior Eric Hirschfield looks for another 12-0 season in singles.
Senior Tyler Kraese in No. 5 singles was the only singles winner for Smithtown East at the county team championships and senior Matt Keys returns to No. 2 doubles after winning in counties with graduate <a href="/topics/Kevin_Smith_%28running_back%29">Kevin Smith</a>. The Bulls boast a new pair of Patricks, Hughes and Edsell.
Half Hollow Hills edged the undefeated team in the county finals, earning the team title after a 12-2 season. Hills returns with its two winning doubles teams of junior Chad Davis and senior <a href="/topics/David_Weiner">David Weiner</a>, 7-6 last season and seniors James Song and Will Choi, 5-0 last season. The Thunder Colts have two promising new seniors in Jeffery Riguer and Chris Guan, who hope to help the team return to the championship.
Sophomore Jesse Dietrichson is a player to watch, competing in No. 1 singles for <a href="/topics/Miller_Place%2C_NY">Miller Place</a>. He made it to the semifinals in singles in the individual tournament after his team took third place in the county. Dietrichson finished with a 9-5 record that matched Miller Place's 9-5 team mark. He will face tough competition in Justin Liu of Smithtown West.
"Badminton on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> was originally for girls only," Miller Place coach Don Pranzo said. "Patricia McCarrick, the Miller Place coach, encouraged schools to allow boys to play 'exhibition matches' and now we find ourselves equal opportunity with separate scoring."
Now the eight Suffolk teams are here to fight for leagues, counties, and the Badminton Way.

Boys badminton: Smithtown East tries to stay on top

The Guinness Book record for longest high school winning streak is held here on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a>. The Miller Place girls badminton team set the bar at 504 consecutive wins in 2005 and <a href="/topics/Pittsburgh_Panthers">the Panthers</a> are back this spring to try for a new streak.
Senior Liz Paturalski and sophomore Joceyln Romonoski won in the team tournament last season and they will be returning as the No. 2 doubles team. The No. 1 doubles team is seniors Ashley Bua and Bailey Kirkpatrick.
<a href="/topics/Pittsburgh_Panthers">The Panthers</a>' continuous streak has ended but the girls refused to relent and took home their 37th <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> team championship last season with a record of 13-1. The singles-heavy win was attributed to the stellar "Broom Brigade" that consisted of four girls who won 63 singles matches in a row. Since they have all graduated, Miller Place looks to dominate the county with its rising doubles game.
"Our girls team will be totally different this year, but I still tell them that fast feet comes first," coach Don Pranzo said. "Agility to move about the court with never-ending stops is important. Endurance in singles is a major factor in a long, close match."
The talent in <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> is spread among 37 teams, compared with Suffolk's eight. The teams are split between five ability-based conferences, one being the strongest. This is the first year that there will be only one county champion in singles and doubles; in the past, there was a winner in each classification.
Defending Nassau team champion Calhoun remains the team to beat after it won No. 2 and No. 3 singles and claimed all four of the doubles individual titles last season. <a href="/topics/Farmingdale%2C_NY">Farmingdale</a> is expected to be Calhoun's toughest competition and <a href="/topics/Great_Neck%2C_NY">Great Neck</a> South and <a href="/topics/Bellmore%2C_NY">Bellmore</a> JFK have risen to Conference 1 from Conference 2. 
Senior Christina Strezenek of Calhoun is an individual to watch and she will face strong competition in Mepham senior Jenna Cavuto, who had seven wins last season in No. 1 singles and was named All-Conference in Conference 1. 
Junior Melanie Pavels of <a href="/topics/Valley_Stream%2C_NY">Valley Stream</a> South was undefeated during the regular season in No. 2 singles and was named All-Conference in Conference 2 and All-County. Also look out for <a href="/topics/East_Meadow%2C_NY">East Meadow</a> senior Katie Klobus, who has a career record of 24-2. Nassau will face a new opponent in <a href="/topics/Long_Beach%2C_NY">Long Beach</a>, which has joined the competition in badminton for the first time. Sophomore Brigitte Gilbert earned the Marines' No. 1 singles spot.
