1. ST. ANTHONY'S GIRLS LACROSSE: The six-time defending CHSAA Class AA champs finished last season ranked second in the country and return a star-studded roster led by All-American Kasey Behr. They open the spring as our No. 1 in the BIG 10. The Friars will again be tested with a challenging non-league schedule that includes several other national powers.

2. SMITHTOWN WEST BOYS LACROSSE: The Bulls have notched wins against Cold Spring Harbor and Garden City, two championship-caliber teams from Nassau, by dominating defensively. On offense, Christian Zawadzki and Ryan Keenan have already produced several highlight-reel plays.

3. BAYPORT-BLUE POINT BASEBALL: The defending state Class A champions are buoyed by one of Long Island's top prospects in lefthander Jack Piekos, who went 11-0 last year with 111 strikeouts. The addition of junior lefty P.J. Weeks and a ton of talent makes them the Suffolk favorite.

4. MANHASSET GIRLS LACROSSE: The Indians enter this season ranked No. 2 in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine. Manhasset was upset in the state Class B semifinals, but returns eight starters, including All-Americans Natalie Stefan, Julia Glynn and Lindsey Ronbeck, and is expected to dominate.

5. EAST MEADOW SOFTBALL: Claire Travis homered as the defending Long Island champs opened their season with a 5-3 win over Plainedge. With Kerri Shapiro in the circle and Madison West behind the plate, the Jets are poised for a repeat.

6. BAY SHORE GIRLS TRACK: Bay Shore is the defending Suffolk Division I champions, topping Sachem North in last year's county championships. Anisa Toppin is the returning county champion in both the long jump and the triple jump. Imani McGhee made waves in the winter season, winning the state title in the long jump.

7. MASSAPEQUA BASEBALL: The reigning Class AA champions have yet to take the field, but next Saturday's non-league opener against Longwood will be a sure test. Alex Cosenza, an all-Long Island pitcher and shortstop Bobby Honeyman make them hard to beat.

8. CHAMINADE BOYS TRACK: After cross country and indoor track CHSAA intersectional championships, the Flyers are going for the triple crown. Chaminade's powerful 4X800 meter relay team, composed of Tom Slattery, Sean Kelly, Gunnar Nolan, and Andrew Dorritie, won the New York State Championship and the National Championship this winter.

9. CHAMINADE BOYS LACROSSE: Sam Bonafede and Sean Cerrone lead a potent offense while Matt Isnardi has already emerged as a quality goalie for the defending CHSAA AAA state champions. Early wins over Massapequa and Ward Melville are impressive.

10. CONNETQUOT SOFTBALL: Sarah McKeveny's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Thunderbirds to a 5-4 win over defending county champion Longwood. Pitcher Erin Sweeny and catcher Angela Schuler form arguably the county's top batterymate duo.
