Magliuglo coming on
Watch out Ryan Savit, you may soon have some company at the top.
While the Half Hollow Hills diver still holds the top score on Long Island with a 277.73, Manhasset's Peter Magliuglo is closing fast. Magliuglo, a sophomore like Savit, posted a 271.57 on Jan. 15 during an 89.5-84.5 win over Port Washington.
"Peter dove last year, and he had talent as a diver, but he wasn't really diving for a club team," Manhasset coach Matt McGrane said. Magliuglo harnessed that talent in the offseason, working with Long Island diving specialist George Taylor.
"I'm generally cautious with my expectations and I try to be as realistic as possible," McGrane said. "Coming in we thought he was going to have a strong year, but I didn't know how strong it was going to be. Going to each competition he's just been getting better."
Hills, Jericho cross over
While football, baseball and even tennis have instituted county crossover games or L.I. Championships, swimming has largely stayed away from the concept. Half Hollow Hills is the exception, participating in a 96-81 defeat of Jericho on Jan. 2. The top team in Suffolk competing against one of the main contenders in Nassau has certainly settled some bets, but it's also added another exciting meet to the schedule.
"It's become an annual thing where we go over to Jericho on winter break," Hills coach Richard Stern said. "Right now it's just Jericho that's expressed interest, and if we could manage to get something going, that'd be great. I'd be all for it."
FENCING
Great Neck South's boys team completed an undefeated season by sweeping a quad meet with Wheatley, Jericho and Cold Spring Harbor. Ethan Levy went 8-1 in foil for South (8-0) and finished 23-3. The Nassau individual championship is Feb. 2 . . . Oyster Bay's Courtney Collins finished 25-1 in epee, the loss coming against North Shore's Rachel Burke in her first bout.
GYMNASTICS
Allison Osmondsen scored a season-high 37.00 on the all-around for Hicksville in a victory over Long Beach last week . . . Oceanside scored a 175.15 in its meet against Massapequa, a school record, according to coach Andy Morris. Oceanside (9-0) broke its 2008 record earlier this season with a 171.6 against Bethpage. Paige McCarthy scored a career-high 36.25 as she won floor (9.4), beam (8.8), uneven bars (8.95) and vault (9.1) . . . Oceanside and undefeated Plainview will meet in the regular-season finale on Feb. 1.
