A personal victory

When Kimberly Kallansrude was in seventh grade in the spring of 2007, she was on the cusp of making the Jericho swimming team. A good swimmer, Kallansrude was nevertheless no sure thing to be named to the squad.

Then she had a meeting with coach Joseph Farrell. He gave her times and guidelines, and Kallansrude spent the summer exercising and practicing harder, eventually making the team that fall. But it would be without Farrell, who died that July.

Fast forward to Sept. 24, 2010, and Kallansrude was one of the main reasons Jericho scored its first victory in their now-annual Joseph Farrell Memorial Meet, 130-112, over Long Beach.

Kallansrude, a junior, won the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.32) and 100 butterfly (1:04.07) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay (2:01.11) and 400 freestyle relay (3:52.85).

"Knowing Kim, it meant everything to her," coach Richard Stern said. "She's one of those girls who swims with passion . . . This was a coming out for her. She's a girl that we've leaned on heavily this year, because she's at that next level now."
