Mo and GN South teammates dominate butterfly
You could say the Great Neck South boys swimming team emerged from its cocoon two years ago.
Since then, it's been steadily flying through the water. It has fluttered away with the last two Nassau championships. The team has star power and depth, and works together like the segments on a caterpillar.
Don't worry, we're going somewhere with this.
See, aside from being the reigning county champs and going undefeated in dual meets so far this season, Great Neck South also has an interesting anecdotal achievement: the Rebels absolutely dominate the 100-yard butterfly.
Told you it would all come together.
Great Neck South has four of the top five times in the butterfly this season, including the first-place slot with standout Sam Mo posting a 52.10.
"Our big thing this year to talk about is that we need to push each other," coach Andy Berlin said. "We've worked very hard on emphasizing that we're going to attain whatever greatness we're going to attain together."
Patrick Yang checks in third (54.50), Sam's brother Dan is next (55.00) and Ben Ching rounds out the group (55.26). Bellmore-Merrick's Austin Kowalsky is second (53.53).
"It's just hard work and what they've done with their training is that no one says, 'I'm only a 'this' swimmer,' " Berlin said. "They've fine-tuned their talents in all the strokes. And we're just very strong in the off-strokes. And this just happens to be an event I've given them all a chance to swim."
