MAGGIE AROESTY
Long Island Swimmer of the Year
Long Beach
Aroesty doesn’t impose any limits on what she can do. When her family was displaced by Superstorm Sandy for a year, she continued to train and compete. She won the state title in the 100-yard breaststroke as a freshman last year, and came back and set the Nassau record in the 200-individual medley this year. She led in both the breaststroke and the medley in the state preliminaries, and then, she won state titles in both events — finishing the medley in an All-American timeof 2 minutes, .71 seconds and the breaststroke in a public school record time of 1:02.19. Soon after being named most outstanding swimmer of the state championships, she said she had her eye on the Federation breaststroke record of 1:01.14. For now, she’ll have to settle for the title of Newsday’s swimmer of the year.
