When Syosset beat Cold Spring Harbor in a Nassau Conference I-A boys tennis match last Wednesday, the Braves snapped one of the more impressive winning streaks in any sport.

Cold Spring Harbor, the four-time defending Nassau and Long Island champions, had won 54 consecutive matches in a three-year span, which has included wins over top non-conference opponents such as Scarsdale, Horace Mann and Half Hollow Hills East. The Seahawks last loss came on May 11, 2009, a 4-3 conference loss to Roslyn.

"The kids were very proud of [the winning streak]," Cold Spring Harbor coach Paul Poschmann said. "It's an honor to win as many games as we did but I'm still confident in these kids. It really doesn't happen too often to run across a stretch like this."

On Wednesday, the difference was third singles, which Ian Baranowski defeated Sean Mullins, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, to give Syosset the 4-3 win.

"This gives my team a huge boost in confidence," Syosset coach Shai Fisher said. "They finally broke through and it gives everyone a renewed sense of relief that they can win."

Syosset (10-2) and Cold Spring Harbor (12-1, 10-1) split their season series, and will only meet again if they reach the Nassau championship.

"We beat them once but they're still a great team. Hopefully we get to see them again and get another opportunity," Fisher said.
