Tamburello lifts Commack in first-round win

Matt Tamburello scored the game-winner on a cross from Jack Miller in the 30th minute yesterday as No. 2 Commack (15-1-1) overcame a one-goal deficit to beat No. 15 Huntington, 2-1, in the first round of the Class AA boys soccer playoffs. Huntington went ahead on Ricky Velasquez's goal six minutes into the game, but sophomore Jake Foley scored his first varsity goal off Jack Miller's pass into the box to tie the game at 1 at 27:28. Huntington's E.J. Connell had 18 saves to keep his team in the game. Commack advances to play No. 10 Northport, Friday at 2:30 p.m.

South Side 1, New Hyde Park 0: Chris Harkins scored from 20 yards out to break a scoreless tie with 9:44 to go as No. 2 South Side (12-1-4) defeated No. 7 New Hyde Park in the Class A quarterfinals. South Side advances to play the winner of Island Trees and Jericho at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Smithtown West 3, Connetquot 2: Matt Hettler scored the game-winner on an assist from Derek Ladeairous with 20 minutes left in the game for No. 3 Smithtown West (15-0-2) in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs. Greg Silvestro tied the game at 2 with 35 minutes to play for No. 14 Connetquot (7-10). Joe Massaro made it 1-0 for Smithtown West 1:30 into the game, and Ryan Schneider also scored a goal. Smithtown West will play host to No. 6 Ward Melville at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Brentwood 2, Hauppauge 0: Jonathan Interiano blast from 35-yards out on a feed from Ronald Garcia with 11:56 left in the first half helped lead No. 4 Brentwood (14-1-2) over No. 13 Hauppauge in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Giancarlo Luna added an insurance goal on a pass from Christian Argueta with less than a minute to play. Brentwood will host West Islip at 2:30 on Friday.

West Islip 3, Comsewogue 0: Phil Denara scored off a through ball from Danny Kyc nine minutes into the game as No. 5 West Islip (14-3-1) defeated No. 12 Comsewogue in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.

Ward Melville 4, Bay Shore 0: Christian Marcel broke a scoreless tie on a direct kick from 25 yards out 18 minutes into the second half as No. 6 Ward Melville (11-2-2) defeated No. 11 Bay Shore in the first round of Class AA playoffs.

Manhasset 5, Lawrence 2: Andrew Kapper scored two goals and had two assists to lead top-seeded Manhasset (12-0-2) past No. 8 Lawrence in the Class A quarterfinals. John Brakatselos scored two goals and had an assist and Matt Mieleszki also scored. Noe Avalos and Edgar Quintanilla scored for Lawrence. Manhasset advances to play Wantagh in the Nassau Class A semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Wantagh 3, Bethpage 1: Alec Chapoteau scored seven minutes in and Michael Rumel added another in the 16th minute as No. 4 Wantagh (10-1-5) defeated No. 12 Bethpage in the the Class A quarterfinals.

GIRLS SOCCER

Shoreham-Wading River 2, Glenn 1: Shannon McDonnell scored the go-ahead goal off a pass from Kari Quinn with 3:27 left in the first half to lead No. 3 Shoreham-Wading River (12-5) over No. 6 Glenn in the the Class A quarterfinals. SWR will take on No. 2 Islip at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Islip 3, Bayport-Blue Point 0: Morgan Santoro scored off a through ball from Paige Costantino with :12 seconds remaining in the half to give No. 2 Islip (8-7-2) a 2-0 lead over No. 7 Bayport-Blue Point in the Class A quarterfinals. Tara Mackey made seven saves.

Kings Park 3, Miller Place 0: Lydia Ottaviano had a goal and an assist and junior Frozahn Esmaelsadah chipped in her first varsity goal for No. 4 Kings Park (8-7-2) over No. 5 Miller Place in the Class A quarterfinals. Kings Park will play at No. 1 Sayville at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
