Uniondale boys track and field wins first county title since 2019 behind Ross Wallace's big night

Looking back on it, Uniondale senior Ross Wallace can finally say his decision was worth it.
Wallace went a little too hard while celebrating his 18th birthday on Monday when he and his family went to AG Steakhouse: a Brazilian, all-you-can-eat restaurant in Westbury. He ate well: filet mignon, ribeye, brisket, beef ribs, lamb chops, fried goat cheese, fried pineapple, mashed potatoes. The problem with his decision was that it came the night before the Nassau Class A indoor track and field championships at St. Anthony’s High School .
Coming into Tuesday, he felt extra heavy. However, he still managed to win both the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs, and also placed second in the 1,000 by just 30 seconds. His efforts scored 28 of Uniondale’s 99 points, leading the team to its first county title since 2019.
“I’m very irresponsible when it comes to eating,” Wallace said. “I should’ve eased up a little, but I still would’ve had all the steak. I had fun. I’m exhausted now, but I’m happy that everything was worth it. These past two days have been very special.”
His night began by winning the 3,200 in 9:56.95 before finishing just 0.03 seconds behind Syosset senior Anthony Fiore in the 1,000 with a 2:36.99. He redeemed his narrow defeat with a victorious 4:40.54 in the 1,600.
Wallace’s teammate — junior Saishun Lamour — won the 600 in 1:25.36. Lamour also ran the third leg of the team’s title-winning 4 x 400 meter relay team, following senior Romain Eccleston and classmate Danny Delva before passing the baton to classmate Ethan Davidson. They ran a collective 3:31.3. Uniondale senior Ai’Shan Powell cleared 6 feet flat to win the high jump.
There were two other Class A double champions: Herricks senior Kenneth Ramdayal and Baldwin senior Brandon Thweatt. Ramdayal threw the shot 53 feet, 7 inches and the weight 67-3 ½. Thweatt sprinted 6.47 in the 55 dash and 7.36 in the 55 hurdles, and also led off for Baldwin’s 4 x 200 crew that won in 1:32.14.
Thweatt was even able to shake it off when he tripped and fell during a practice hurdle.
After sharing a nice laugh with his teammates and coach Mike Higgins, the pressure rolled off Thweatt’s shoulders. He got back up, got on his starting block, took off, cleared every hurdle with precision and dominated his way to his second consecutive double county championship.
“I was kind of sluggish going into it, but that gave me a rush of adrenaline,” Thweatt said. “After that, I jogged back feeling happy, and I was pumped. I felt ready.”
Lee: 'Finally my time'

Roslyn senior Paul Lee has spent his whole career being blocked in the deep pool of talented throwers on Long Island. He finally got to prove his worth in the Nassau Class B championships at St. Anthony’s on Wednesday night.
Lee won the shot put with a top throw of 46-6 and the weight throw with a 56-4 ¼. They were the first two county championship victories of his four-year varsity career.
“It feels amazing, especially because in previous years, I’ve lost by inches,” Lee said. “It was finally my time. I was mentally struggling, but I just had to tell myself that this was my year and I was going to win.”
Calhoun scored 78 points to win the team title. Senior Oraldini Mpoy flew 21-6 ½ to win the long jump and junior Jaden Hines went 43-9 ¾ to take the triple jump.
Frazer’s next milestone

Wantagh senior Ian Frazer saw his year of firsts continue in the Nassau Class C championships at St. Anthony’s on Monday night. He won both the 3,200 (10:21.48) and the 1,600 (4:30.51), marking the first time he was crowned a double champion at a single meet. He is coming off a cross country season in which he qualified for the New York Federation championship for the first time.
He was Monday’s only double individual champion.
“I’ve always doubled since freshman year, so I guess the experience helped today, but this is the first time I was ever able to come back after the first event and still succeed,” Frazer said. “I was able to pull it off, and I’m super happy about that. There were always those guys who ran the county when I was younger, so to be able to have become one of them is awesome.”
Valley Stream North won the team title with 141 points. Juniors Evan Truong (1,000, 2:47.1) and Maxximus Estrada (pole vault, 11-1), as well as senior Albert Strojan (shot put, 42-¼), all won individual titles. The team’s 4 x 800 crew of senior Ryan Carra, freshman Gavin Trustey, senior Matthew Gangi and Truong paced a collective 8:57.03 to place first.
