East Meadow track and field's Zaria Hall wins three distance races at Nassau Class A championships

East Meadow senior Zaria Hall is like the veteran boxer of Nassau distance running. She possesses the power, finesse and intelligence that makes her the apex predator of her county’s field.
She knows exactly what to do, when to do it and how hard to go once she flips the switch. She can conserve her energy and wear her opponents down, allowing her to bob and weave her way toward the front of the pack, then hit the leaders with a vicious knockout punch that they never see coming in the final lap. In Hall’s case, that vicious knockout punch is her strong kick, which often turns tight races into blowouts within mere moments.
She did that three times at the Nassau Class A indoor track and field championships on Tuesday at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington. Her night began with a win in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 10 minutes, 24.39 seconds. Later, she placed first in the 1,000 in 3:00.78 before finishing with a victory in the 1,500 in 5:02.94.
“I’ve been doing this tactic since my freshman year,” Hall said. “I know my competition and what they’re capable of. Some races are tactical, others I have to go hard from the gun. I think the key to tonight was a little bit of both feeling good physically and mentally. It comes from conserving energy, taking time to recover after each race . . . but also staying patient, knowing when to go and knowing that I can do this, and that this is where I belong.”
Tuesday marked the fourth consecutive Nassau championship meet (spring 2024, winter 2025, spring 2025, winter 2026) that Hall won all three distance races in her class.
If Hall is Nassau’s veteran fighter, then Baldwin senior Breanne Barnett is its machine. Her friends call her, “The Robot,” because of her consistency in her sprinting mechanics. Those were on full display Tuesday. Barnett — the state’s top-ranked runner in the 300 for the second year in a row — won the 55 in 7.1 seconds and the 300 in 39.46.
“Just having these county championships feels good, but I’m not done yet, though,” Barnett said. “I’m still trying to get that state record in the 300.”
The only other double Class A champion was Freeport senior Angel Omokeni, who flew 17 feet, 4 3⁄4 inches to win the long jump and 37-9 1⁄2 to take the triple jump.
Massapequa won the Class A team championship, scoring 92 points. Senior Emma Villalta won the 600 in 1:37.18 and classmate Keira McLaughlin cleared 10- 1⁄2 to win the pole vault.
Trio puts on a show

Roosevelt senior Esmia Thomas, Sewanhaka senior Zoe Amadike and Garden City junior Taylor Maguire ran monopolies over their trades in the Nassau Class B championships Wednesday night.
Thomas won the 55 in 7.01, tying her for No. 1 in the state with Janelia Williams: a junior from Paul Robeson in Brooklyn. She also helped Roosevelt’s 4 x 200 relay team to victory in 1:49.15.
Amadike flew 17-5 1⁄4 to win the long jump and 36-1 to take the triple jump, while Maguire won the 1,000 in 3:09.65 and the 1,500 in 4:59.58.
It was the first time Maguire has won an individual county title.
“It was really satisfying to kick my way in and see my name on the scoreboard up in that first spot,” Maguire said. “I’m super happy with what happened today because it really puts a good light on my whole season. I’m always going to look back on it and think, that was the first time I ever won a county championship. It was everything I could’ve wanted.”
Hewlett scored 117 1⁄2 points to win the Class B team title. Junior Janee Llanos won the 55 hurdles in 8.79, senior Nylah Phillips took the 300 in 40.99 and senior Maree Drayling cleared 8-6 to win the pole vault.
Fessler: Thrice as nice
Valley Stream North junior Paige Fessler racked up her own trio of gold medals at the Nassau Class C championships, winning the high jump (5-7), long jump (17-8) and 55 hurdles (8.86), all while bouncing back and forth between the three events Monday.
Her hurdles victory came by thousandths of a second, and also marked the completion of her night.
“I came in ranked No. 1 in all three, so I came in thinking there was no room for error,” Fessler said. “There was a lot of stress, especially between the long jump and high jump. The hurdles made me work the hardest. Once I crossed the finish line and saw my name at the top, I was relieved.”
North Shore won the Class C team championship with 118 points. Seniors Joanna Kenney (3,000, 9:51.63), Chloe Connolly (1,500, 5:07.07) and Danielle DeMillio (pole vault, 9-0), junior Chloe Brady (1,500 walk, 9:09.33) and eighth grader Tula Belle Gumm (1,000, 3:14.13) all won individual titles.
