Coach: Steve Mariano
2010 Finish: Nassau Class A Champs, Long Island runner-ups.
Top Returnees: Sr. Setter Christian Smith, 2010 Newsday All-Long Island selection. Sr. OH/MH Chris Husmann, 2010 Newsday All-Long Island selection. Jr. Libero Frank DelGiudice.
Analysis: The two-time Nassau champions were served a dose of humble pie in last year's Long Island championship when they were downed in three sets by Half Hollow Hills. But the Chiefs return Nassau's top two players in Smith and Husmann, which is as good of a duo as Long Island has seen in some time. Husmann will alternate from middle to outside, while Smith (pictured, top left) will be the primary setter.
With Suffolk juggernauts such as Hills and Smithtown East not expected to be as strong as usual this season, this is Massapequa's best shot at winning the Island and advancing to the Division I state tourney Nov. 19 in Cicero.
"Right now, the kids are so psyched for the season," Mariano said. "They have talked about winning states."
