Undefeated (Boys) Showdown: Plainview JFK vs. Massapequa

We are at the point of the season when there are precious few undefeated teams, which makes these mid-October clashes all the more special.

Tuesday, undefated Massapequa visits fellow Plainview JFK in a rematch of last year's county final, won in five heart-stopping sets by the Chiefs. Massapequa is essentially the same squad as 2010, led by middle hitter Chris Husmann and all-around specialist Christian Smith. Middle blocker Steven Woessner has come into his own, adding a third dimension to the near-unstoppable 1-2 punch that is Husmann/Smith.

Plainview JFK lost its court leader Greg Rankel due to graduation, but coach Russi Villalta once again has reloaded with yet another contender. Evan Schwartz and Chris Ferolito have emerged as All-Long Island-caliber talents, as JFK has yet to lose a set in Conference play.

Massapequa has not dropped a set since their season-opening win over Port Washington, a fellow championship contender. Chiefs coach Steve Mariano says his team has "not peaked yet", which, if he is correct, is a scary proposition for the rest of Long Island.

And let's not forget about the Nassau girls.... Wantagh (7-0) visits South Side (6-2) on Tuesday in an intriguing A-I match. Since dropping their first two conference matches of the season, South Side has won six straight, including impressive sweeps over Bellmore JFK and Garden City this past week. The Warriors, led by Jenny Ilibassi and Lauren Pennino, deserve to be heavy favorites. But the Cyclones could make things interesting.
