You could excuse Seaford's team if it was fooled by Stephanie Viteritti's shot that clinched the Long Island Class B volleyball championship for Glenn Sunday night at St. Joseph's College. After a night full of digs and assists, Viteritti pushed a shot just over Seaford's front line that found the floor for the final point.

"I tried to hit it soft because I knew they were backing up," Viteritti said. The shot was precise, placed nearly as well as the 34 assists she accumulated throughout the 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 win.

The main beneficiaries of Viteritti's passing were Simi Familusi and Grace Cergol, who each had 12 kills.

Viteritti knew her team would need to use speed and quickness to equalize Seaford's size. Familusi would not be deterred, crashing to the net in key spots, including three kills late in game three. Two Familusi kills helped keep Glenn ahead in the deciding game four.

"We were trying to run a fast offense to move the ball around and away from their big blockers," Viteritti said. "We tried to catch them off guard."

It worked, despite the strong games from Seaford's Jessica Rini and Emma Schait.

"All year we've clawed our way along," coach Kevin Harrington said. "I'm really proud of what they accomplished."

Mattituck wins Class C. Shannon Dwyer, Mattituck's athletic senior middle hitter, came up big in in the Long Island Class C final. Dwyer helped Mattituck (10-7) overcome a deficit of two games to one to defeat Carle Place, 25-13, 13-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22. She had 12 kills and four blocks.

"It really comes from the setters," Dwyer said. "When the setters are on, then I'm on."

Dwyer was at her best as she put away consecutive kills to finish game one, set up by Laurel Bertolas and Carly Doorhy.

Bertolas had 15 assists and two aces. "She's a very instinctive player and she's become a big team leader," coach Frank Massa said of Bertolas. "She's priceless out there on the court."
