Vollono, Donohue leading Lutheran softball
The softball dynasty at Long Island Lutheran continues.
The depending IPPSAL champs took the next step toward completing an unbeaten league season with a 10-0 win over Portledge last Wednesday to improve to 8-0 in league.
Danielle Vollono pitched a one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts and also went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Bitsy Donohue was 2-for-4 with two triples and an RBI.
Lutheran won two of the last three league titles but has added depth this season. In addition to the batterymates of Vollono and Donohue, they've been getting production out of Sarah Bouzaidi, Niki Calimopulos and seventh-grade first baseman Stephanie Rinauvo, who is hitting over .600.
Should they win another league title, Lutheran will advance to the state NYSAIS tournament on May 23.
"I tell the girls, 'We can't worry about what's in front of us, we can't worry about what's behind us,' " Lutheran coach Helen Speck said. "Just play within yourself."
