Ward Melville fencing tops Winter Big 10 again

1. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING
The Ward Melville girls went 4-0 this week, recording victories over Brentwood, Centereach, Newfield and Commack. Angela Zhang went 3-0 in all four matches as the Patriots extended their win streak to 181 matches.
The undefeated defending Suffolk champions kept on rolling behind Mike Riolo, who bowled a 278 in Game 2 of a 703 series against Bellport, and Jacob Klein, who bowled a 278 in Game 1 of a 753 series against Sayville. East Islip boasts the top team average among Long Island public schools (1098.88), with a big boost from Justin Orobello, whose 232.97 average is third in the county.
3. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL
It didn't take long for sophomore guard Devonte Green to settle in with his new team. He averaged 28 points in three games last week. Robyn Missa, a 6-9 center, is also coming around and continues to produce steady point and rebound totals.
The Thunderbirds make their debut in the BIG 10 after another impressive week. Led by Eddie Hart (132), Greg Cherry (152) and Chris Beal (182), they crushed the competition at the North Fork Invitational at Mattituck by over 120 points. They're undefeated in 10 dual meets and five tournaments, including the ultracompetitive Massapequa Christmas tourney.
The Arrows won three League I dual meets this week to clinch at least a tie for the League I title. The defending Suffolk champions escaped with a 31-28 win over Brentwood, then had two blowout victories, including a 56-19 win over rival Longwood.
The Ward Melville boys also went 4-0 this week. Manny Thomas and Mike Antipas both went 3-0 last Monday against second-place Commack. The boys improved their win streak to 101 by beating Brentwood and Half Hollow Hills. Devin Reina and Mike Antipas went 3-0 in foil last Monday against Brentwood. Reina won the match-clinching bout.
7. NORTHPORT BOYS TRACK
Despite a longer than usual cross country season, Northport didn't miss a beat once winter got underway. Mike Brannigan won his first race of the season, earning a Millrose Games berth with a 4:17.04 in the invitational mile at the Hispanic Games.
8. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN GIRLS BASKETBALL
The defending Federation Class A champs dominated Archbishop Williams and Albany last week, before falling to Neumann Goretti (Pa.) on Saturday. Still, the Crusaders (9-2) are among the elite, led by reigning LI Player of the Year Boogie Brozoski, Katie Lavelle and Nani Redford. They will be tested in upcoming games against Point Pleasant Beach and St. Mary's.
The three-time defending county champions haven't lost a meet in two years, and recently narrowly defeated longtime rival Plainview, 166.7-166.2. They make their 2014 debut in the BIG 10. Senior Sarah Ciresi, coming off a sprained ankle, notched a season-high 35.6 in the all-around against Wantagh this week. Meanwhile, freshman Alyssa Firth continues to make a big splash, with all-around wins against Hicksville (34.05) and Plainview (35.5).
They added two more impressive league victories last week. Led by Amanda Schilling (215.5) and Nichole Baione (211), the Redmen's 1,063 team average is more than 100 pins ahead of rival Middle Country, the defending state champs.
