Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro, who has been rehabbing a surgically repaired knee since August, will return to action Friday night in Providence, R.I.

DiPietro will make his third rehab start for Bridgeport and his first since Dec. 11, when he sat out the third period with leg tightness.

After consulting with team doctors and additional specialists, DiPietro received medical clearance to play and accepted a second conditioning assignment.

The Islanders want DiPietro to make it through at least one full game at the AHL level before discussing an NHL return.
