Former Islanders assistant coach and Bridgeport head coach Greg Cronin has been suspended by Northeastern University for recruiting violations.

Cronin served as an assistant for the Islanders from 1999-2003 and as head coach of the Sound Tigers for two seasons from 2003-05. He is in his sixth season at Northeastern University.

"We are taking this action now to reinforce a culture of integrity within our department,"  Northeastern University's athletic director Peter Roby said in a statement.

According to NU's release, Cronin's offenses "relate to telephone and text message" violations. Cronin and assistant head coach Albie O'Connell are suspended indefinitely.

If there was any intention of bringing yet another guy with University of Maine connections into the fold--GM Garth Snow, goalie coach Mike Dunham and head coach Jack Capuano all played there--that's going to be a tough sell now.

Cronin coached at University of Maine for three seasons.
