Islanders' possible draft prospects
With the fifth pick . . .
Here are a few prospects the Islanders will consider with the No. 5 pick in the June draft:
Cam Fowler, D, Windsor (OHL): One of the top defensemen in the draft rankings all year, Fowler is a solid puck-mover and scorer who could make the jump straight to Long Island next season.
Erik Gudbranson, D, Kingston (OHL): Big (6-4), physical, righthanded shot leaped over Fowler in the final Central Scouting rankings as the top defenseman. Would give the Isles a blue line presence they haven't had.
Brett Connolly, RW, Prince George (WHL): A hip injury kept this scoring winger from being in the top overall pick conversation, but he would look mighty good skating alongside John Tavares.Nino Niederreiter, RW, Portland (WHL): An outside shot to crack the top five, but he's a pure scorer and a big, physical player who plays with Alex Ovechkin-like abandon. Swiss native succeeded in Canadian junior hockey, so he has some guts, too.
