John Tavares, who sustained what the Islanders termed a "mild concussion'' in the team's season-opening game against Dallas last Saturday, returned to the ice early Tuesday morning in a non-contact session.

He did not participate in the team‘s regular practice at IceWorks.

A person within the organization said all went well and the plan is for Tavares to skate again on Wednesday.

Tavares may join the team for its game in Washington Wednesday night, but he is not expected to see any action. He could return Friday against Pittsburgh.

Tavares suffered the injury late in the first period of a 5-4 shootout loss to the Stars after an open-ice collision with winger Adam Burish.
