UPDATE: According to agent Mike Deutsch, Martinek was released from the hospital earlier today. Martinek also told Newsday via text "I'm OK"  after his release.

Latvian defenseman Arturs Kulda has been suspended three games for his hit on Radek Martinek yesterday that resulted in a severe concussion for the 34-year-old Islanders.

Martinek was carted off on a stretcher and hospitalized overnight after the play, which occurred in the first period of Czech's 4-2 win.

"The video showed Arturs Kulda jumping into the situation, hitting Martinek's head and neck area," Chairman of the IIHF Disciplinary Panel Jan-Ake Edvinsson said in a release."

According to Dr. Beat Villiger, the IIHF Medical Supervisor, Martinek will likely miss the rest of the tournament.

"The player has suffered a severe concussion and a severe bruise (hematoma)," Villiger said in the release."The CT scan showed no further injuries, but there is very little chance he can play in the championship."
