Last day before roster trim
Given the three recent injuries to Mark Streit (shoulder), Kyle Okposo (shoulder), and Rob Schremp (back), the Islanders have a bit more flexibility when considering how to trim to their roster to 23 by tomorrow's deadline.
I'd expect tt least one player will be waived today. Here's a list of who's still around:
Forwards: Matt Moulson, John Tavares, Trent Hunter, Josh Bailey, Frans Nielsen, Nino Niederreiter, Blake Comeau, Doug Weight, P.A. Parenteau, Matt Martin, Zenon Konopka, Jon Sim, Andy Hilbert, Trevor Gillies
Defensemen: James Wisniewski, Mike Mottau, Mark Eaton, Radek Martinek, Jack Hillen, Andrew MacDonald, Milan Jurcina, Bruno Gervais, Calvin de Haan
Goaltenders: Dwayne Roloson, Rick DiPietro
Just some things to consider with the final cuts approaching:
--Expect the Islanders to carry eight defenseman, which means the team must make a decision on Calvin de Haan. His age prohibits him from being sent to Bridgeport, so it's either up with the big club or back to his junior team the Oshawa Generals. Each of the other eight defensemen still remaining are on one-way contracts, however.
--Will Matt Martin and/or Nino Niederreiter make the team? My guess would be yes, but we'll see how the Islanders feel soon.
--Andy Hilbert, Jon Sim and Trevor Gillies are all on two-way contracts, but would have to clear waivers.
Lines from today's practice:
Comeau-Tavares-Parenteau
Moulson-Nielsen-Hunter
Bailey-Weight-Sim
Gillies-Konopka-Hilbert
Matt Martin (foot) and Nino Niederreiter (calf) are both coming back from minor injuries and skating as the extra forwards
Defense (Pairings are pretty jumbled since there are currently 9 d on the ice)
Wisniewski-Mottau
Eaton-Martinek
Hillen-MacDonald
Gervais-de Haan
DiPietro
Roloson
