Veteran defenseman Mark Eaton is done for the year, the team announced. He is expected to undergo season-ending surgery on his right hip soon.

The 33-year-old veteran flew back to New York during the Islanders recent road trip to have an evaluation after which he was ruled out indefinitely.

Although the team declined to specify the injury, Newsday confirmed via a source with knowledge of the injury that Eaton needed surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, the exact same injury that shelved Mike Mottau in late December. Mottau is also done for the year.

Eaton, signed to a two-year, $5 million deal this July, had three assists in 34 games played for the Islanders.
