Tonelli scores two as Isles top Rangers
John Tonelli scored the go-ahead goal in the second period as the Islanders defeated the Rangers, 5-2, in the first game of the Semifinal Round of the Stanley Cup playoffs before a crowd of 15,008 at Nassau Coliseum. Tonelli broke a 2-2 tie at 6:47 of the middle period and added a second goal early in the third period.
The Islanders would go on to sweep the Rangers in four games. They would then win their second straight Stanley Cup by defeating the Minnesota North Stars in five games in the Finals.
