Isles score three shorthanded

The Islanders took just 18 shots on goal and had just one even-strength goal but defeated the Washington Capitals, 6-1, before 15,307 fans at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders scored a franchise-record three shorthanded goals, two on the same Capitals power play. John Tonelli scored the first shorthanded goal to make the score 3-1 in the second period. Denis Potvin scored a power-play goal to make it 4-1 in the third period, his second goal of the game. Then with Clark Gillies in the box, Butch Goring and Anders Kallur scored 49 seconds apart. The win was the sixth straight for the Islanders and extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1).
