Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek was hospitalized after suffering a concussion during Czech's 4-2 win over Latvia at the World Championships today, Newsday has learned.

Martinek's agent Mike Deutsch confirmed to Newsday via email that Martinek sustained the head injury after a first-period hit from Arturs Kulda, although the severity of the concussion is not immediately known. Deutsch said via text he is awaiting further updates but has been told Martinek did not suffer a spinal injury on the play.

"No spinal injury. He's doing well. Will be released from the hospital tomorrow."

Martinek was carted off the ice on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital; the 34-year-old veteran is likely to miss the rest of the tournament.

The IIHF also said Kulda's hit is under review to determine if any supplementary discipline is necessary.

Kulda, a 22-year-old defenseman in Atlanta's system, spent the majority of this season with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. He played two games this season for the Thrashers.
