MONTREAL -- Ruslan Fedotenko is the latest Rangers forward to go on the shelf. Fedotenko, who suffered back spasms in Toronto on Saturday and was shut down after playing only 7:07, was scratched Sunday night.

"I'm not sure when he's going to play," said coach John Tortorella, who summoned Kris Newbury from the AHL's Connecticut Whale to step in for Fedotenko. The 32-year-old left wing, who had played in every game this season, has six goals and 13 points.

Newbury, 29, was 15-21-36 in 30 games in the AHL but had no points in six games with the Rangers this season.

The news came as Brandon Dubinsky (sore shoulder), who is on the trip, missed his third straight game. "We wanted to give him this weekend [off]," Tortorella said. "Hopefully, the team will have a full day off tomorrow. Hopefully, things will settle down."

The Rangers play the next two games at home, Tuesday against the Predators and Thursday against the Penguins.

Dubinsky's game had really improved before his right shoulder was jammed against the boards Tuesday by the Coyotes' Taylor Pyatt. He had four goals and four assists in eight games. X-rays were clear, Dubinsky said. He is working out and receiving treatment but has not practiced with the team since.

Tortorella said there was no consideration given to shortening Erik Christensen's conditioning stint in Hartford and calling him back. "He'll spend the two weeks there," he said. Christensen, who played only four games in December, was reassigned Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are carrying only six defensemen. Jeff Woywitka (bruised foot) was shut down Tuesday and hopes to skate Tuesday. Michael Sauer still is recovering from a concussion and is out indefinitely. Steve Eminger is rehabbing from surgery to repair a shoulder separation suffered in Phoenix on Dec. 17 and will miss several more weeks.
