Most of the first 12 minutes period was played without stoppages, with Antti Niemi forced to make leg saves on Darroll Powe, Jeff Carter, Simon Gagne.

The best scoring chance for the Hawks came when Patrick Kane banged a rebound off the left post with just over seven minutes left. Then with Marian Hossa in the box for slashing, Niemi gloved but couldn’t hold Braydon Coburn’s slapper from the point and while falling, Scott Hartnell swiped the puck across to the left to Danny Briere, who scored his 11th of the playoffs at 14:58 for a 1-0 lead.

Dan Carcillo took a run at Adam Burish along the mid-ice boards with 1:55 left, a move that triggered two fist-slams into the glass behind the bench by an enraged Laviolette. But the Hawks didn’t cash in, and the period ended testily with a scrum, resulting in Byfuglien being sent off for roughing. Each club had nine shots.
