After a scoreless first period, Erik Christensen, on the power play, gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead when his shot from a sharp angle on the right side, with Derek Stepan in front, beat Neuwirth at 5:30.  Wojtek Wolski and Brian McCabe had the assists.

The goal came after a long delay when ref Chris Rooney injured his right knee, and had to receive medical attention. He was replaced by standby Frederick L'Ecuyer.

But with 53.8 seconds left in the period, the Caps buzzed, and Alex Ovechkin, who had been taken down earlier in the sequence, got up and headed to the left post and managed to get his stick on Jason Arnott’s pass from the right corner and tip it over Lundqvist.  Mike Green recorded his third assist of the series.

The Rangers thought they had regained the lead when Ruslan Fedotenko threw the puck from behind the net off John Erskine and it slid across to the post and in. Referee Tim Peel ruled goal, and the Garden went crazy but a video review overturned the call, saying the official clock read 0.0.
