On a fittingly rainy day in Manhattan, family and friends will meet for services for my mother-in-law, Evelyn Durkin, whose Irish will of iron finally broke late Saturday night. The funeral mass and burial is tomorrow, followed by a sweet but wistful gathering to celebrate the passing of one of the last of the old-school moms, whose family shines and carries on.
They say we sail in the wake of those who came before us. Today and tomorrow are days to reflect on that passage, before we resume our own journeys in these wind-swept times.....
