Rangers fall to Devils after poor performance in second period

NEWARK — Riding a dominating second period during which they outplayed the Rangers and outshot them 17-5, the Devils won, 5-2, Tuesday night at Prudential Center.
Lee Stempniak scored for the third time this season against his former club to snap a 2-2 tie at 18:06 of the second. At 17:16 of the third, Sergey Kalinin beat Henrik Lundqvist on a breakaway, and Adam Larsson’s long empty-netter finished the scoring with 28.8 seconds left.
It was the first loss in the last four road games for the Rangers (34-20-6), who play five of the next six away from Madison Square Garden. The Devils (30-24-7), in a battle for a wild-card slot, took the season series, 2-1-1. They allowed only 19 shots on Cory Schneider.
The Rangers had a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by Kevin Hayes and Dominic Moore before the desperate Devils took over.
