PITTSBURGH - The Rangers have acquired veteran enforcer/left wing Jody Shelley from the San Jose Sharks for a sixth-round draft pick in 2011.
Shelley, 34, has 71 penalty minutes and three assists this year in 34 games. He was out two months after sustaining a broken hand on Nov. 7 and is earning $725,000 in the final year of a two-year contract. Since his return to action on Jan. 2, he's fought Nashville's Wade Belak and he decked Toronto's Colton Orr on Monday.
Presumably, Donald Brashear, who cleared waivers Friday, will be sent to Hartford.
If the Rangers re-sign Shelley next season, the pick becomes a fifth-rounder. The deal came just prior to the 3 p.m. deadline, when rosters were frozen for the Olympic break.
Shelley's 1,300 penalty minutes since the start of his first full season in 2001-02 are the second most in the NHL. Only Ottawa's Chris Neil has more with 1,440.
The Sharks are tied with Washington for the most points in the NHL with 89. The Rangers are tied for 10th in the East with Atlanta heading into Friday's games.
