KANATA, Ontario — Rick Nash did not play Sunday, having been injured twice — apparently in the leg — in Friday night’s win over Carolina. Alain Vigneault said it was the second occurrence, a blocked shot, that was the problem. He said there is “a good chance” Nash will be able to play Monday night against the Sabres at the Garden.
Chris Kreider, out Friday with neck spasms, was back, skating with Derek Stepan and J.T. Miller. Mats Zuccarello started at left wing with Derick Brassard and Jesper Fast, although Vigneault changed that line late in the first period and did much line shuffling late in the 3-0 loss.
The late Frey a hockey fan
It was fitting that the Rangers saluted the late Glenn Frey, one of the founders of The Eagles, during Tuesday night’s game. Frey, according to tributes written since his death last Monday, was a hockey fan. His song “New Kid in Town” reportedly was written in honor of Gene Carr, who was traded to the Kings by the Rangers.
Sens’ Ryan speaks up
Bobby Ryan, Ottawa’s second-leading scorer, was startlingly critical of his team after it allowed three third-period goals in a loss to the Islanders on Friday night. At the time, he said, “It’s our job to play 60 minutes and we had a problem in the third period. We were all over the ice.”
Coach Dave Cameron was asked about that before Sunday’s game and was sanguine. “I like guys making comments because now they have to do it,” said Cameron, who can get animated during news conferences. “If you say the check is in the mail, it had better be in the mail.”
Ryan did deliver, scoring the deciding goal with 19.9 seconds left in the second period. A young fan held up a sign telling Ryan, “If You Score, My Dad Promised We Can Get a Puppy.”
