Seaver helps Mets clinch NL pennant

The Mets won the second NL pennant in franchise history, beating the heavily favored Cincinnati Reds, 7-2, in the fifth and deciding game of the NLCS at Shea Stadium. Tom Seaver pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run before Tug McGraw came in to record the final two outs. Despite an 82-79 record that season, the Mets won the NL East by 1 1/2 games over the Cardinals. Stuck in last place Aug. 30, they went an NL-best 21-8 in the final 29 games to earn the unlikeliest of playoff berths. The Mets lost to Oakland in seven games in the World Series.
