The 35-year-old defenseman, who has played in the AHL the last two seasons, is out of the organization.

He cleared waivers and is a UFA, and insiders say he has some offers  (Edmonton? Ottawa?) ---as well he should, because he will be inexpensive; the Rangers are continuing to pay him this season.

They also will absorb his pro-rated cap hit this year, and two-thirds of the remaining owed year spread over the next two seasons.

No word on whether Montreal has exercised its buyout of Scott Gomez, another former Ranger. .
