Memorial set for longtime turf writer Bortstein
(AP) — A track-side memorial is planned at Santa Anita Park for Larry Bortstein, the veteran horse racing writer who died last month at age 67.
Park officials said Wednesday that Bortstein will be honored Feb. 24 at Santa Anita's FrontRunner Restaurant, following the afternoon's races.
His longtime friend and colleague, Bill Christine, a former Los Angeles Times writer, will host the event.
Bortstein died Jan. 31 after suffering a pulmonary embolism.
He covered racing for the Orange County Register for 17 years and was a contributor to the California Thoroughbred magazine.
