NBC just short of gold on U.S.-Canda hockey coverage
NBC did a fine job covering an Olympic hockey tournament that was "tremendously tremendous," as analyst Ed Olcyk memorably dubbed U.S. vs. Canada I on Feb. 21.
The finale Sunday was so good, it was difficult to blame analyst Jeremy Roenick for crying from excitement before overtime. A couple of quibbles about the gold-medal game, though:
NBC should have shown more of the celebrations in the stands and across Canada, as that was a huge part of the story.
Also, the network did a poor job explaining overtime and shootout rules, leaving even avid fans baffled as OT began.
Still, it was great theater.
Bottom line: The NHL doesn't want to go to Sochi in 2014, but after the past two Sundays, it has to.
