The Associated Press Sports Editors have recognized the Newsday sports section as among the tops in the nation.

At the contest judging this week in Orlando, Fla., Newsday received top 10 honors for special section and honorable mention for its daily section in the over 250,000 circulation category.

"The entire sports staff has worked so hard, and it's an honor to be recognized for that work,'' Newsday sports editor Hank Winnicki said. "We had a terrific year in 2009, and we continue to provide Long Islanders with some of the best sports coverage in the country.''

Newsday's daily coverage included the Yankees' winning their 27th World Series as well as golf's U.S. Open at Bethpage Black.

Newsday's 2009 baseball preview was cited as one of the 10 best for special sections. The baseball preview featured CC Sabathia gearing up for his first season with the Yankees, and a look at the two new stadiums - Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.
