Octavio Dotel signs with Pirates
The Pirates signed righthanded reliever Octavio Dotel and he will be the closer to begin the season. Dotel hasn't been a closer since 2007. Dotel went 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP last season with the White Sox. In 62 1/3 innings, he allowed 54 hits, walked 36 and struck out 75. He had a 10.83 K/9, but a 5.2 BB/9. He allowed seven home runs and 19 the past two seasons. Dotel is an extreme fly ball pitcher (51 percent last season), but going from U.S. Cellular Field to PNC Park should help. Dotel may start the season as closer, but don't be surprised if Joel Hanrahan takes over the job at some point during the year.
