Players on Giants' radar

Five unrestricted free agents the Giants might look at as the market opens Friday:

AARON KAMPMAN DE, Packers

If the Giants are looking for a jolt to their defensive line but are not interested in spending the huge amounts that landing Julius Peppers will cost, Kampman is a solid option. He's coming off knee surgery and will be 30 when the season starts, but he's a good end whose time with the Packers has probably ended (they play a 3-4 and he moved to outside linebacker last year).

DARREN SHARPER S, Saints

Sharper was a free agent last year, so imagine how different the Giants' season would have been had they signed him then. They have another chance. Some drawbacks: He'll be 35 in November and not terrific in run support. But he's a ballhawk (ask Eli Manning, who has thrown four interceptions to him in his career, three returned for touchdowns) and would be a good insurance policy in case Kenny Phillips cannot return at peak condition. Plus, at Sharper's age, a one-year contract would not be an insult.

ANTREL ROLLE S, Cardinals

Probably the best safety on the market, the Cards are releasing Rolle with $12 million owed to him in 2010 with the hopes that they can sign him back for less. Rolle, 27, will test the market, but his price and terms might be too high for the Giants. He has developed into a good free safety, which is the position the Giants want Phillips to play. But again, there's no guarantee that Phillips will be back in top form.

GARY BRACKETT LB, Colts

He'd be a great fit in the middle of the defense, but the question is whether he'll be available. Due to become an unrestricted free agent, he and the Colts have been negotiating a long-term deal. But unless that deal is signed, other teams will be able to make their pitches as well. He's a strong tackler and a good locker-room presence, which might be what Tom Coughlin is looking for after saying he thought the team lost its identity in 2009.

BOBBIE WILLIAMS G, Bengals

One of the NFL's top run-blocking guards, Williams also has the benefit of being one of the few unrestricted free agents at the position. If the Giants are serious about shuffling their offensive line, they might start here, a move that would give them three potential Pro Bowlers in the middle of the group with Williams, Shaun O'Hara and Chris Snee.
