Leaders, Legends in Big Ten

When the Big Ten plays its first conference championship game next season, it'll be the Leaders division against the Legends division.

The conference, expanding to 12 teams in all sports and adding divisions and a championship game in football starting next season, also unveiled a new logo and 18 football awards, each named after two standout Big Ten performers.

"The Legends, not too hard in that we have 215 College Football Hall of Fame members, we have 15 Heisman Trophy winners," Commissioner Jim Delany said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. "We thought it made perfect sense to recognize the iconic and the legendary . . . the emphasis here is to recognize the mission of using intercollegiate athletics and higher education to build future leaders."

GOLFAppleby comeback player of year

Stuart Appleby has been voted the PGA Tour comeback player of the year after going from his worst season to a magical win.

Appleby won The Greenbrier Classic by closing with a 59, making him one of only two players to hit golf's magic number in the last round. His historic win followed a year in which he finished outside the top 125 on the money list for the first time since his rookie season.

The Australian used a one-time exemption for career money to keep his card, and he topped off his year by winning the Australian Masters. Players voted for Appleby over Rocco Mediate and Arjun Atwal.

Promoter Don King was stopped by security at Cleveland's Hopkins International Airport for having ammunition in his carry-on luggage.

Hopkins Airport spokeswoman Jacqueline Mayo says King, 79, was stopped by members of the Transportation Safety Administration on Sunday night. She says King had ammunition for .38-caliber and .357-caliber firearms in his bag.

Mayo says the ammunition was taken and that King was released to continue his trip. She said she didn't know if King received a citation.
