Martina Navratilova was hospitalized in Kenya because of fluid accumulation in her lungs after attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The 54-year-old tennis great is expected to recover. Navratilova was diagnosed with high-altitude pulmonary edema, said Dr. David Silverstein at Nairobi Hospital. She was trying to climb the mountain in Tanzania for a sports charity as part of a 27-person team. It faced heavy snows and mist since beginning the trek Monday up the 19,340-foot mountain. She had reached nearly 14,800 feet.

Former Chicago Cubs player and broadcaster Ron Santo, who died Dec. 3 of bladder cancer at age 70, was remembered with smiles and happy memories Friday as friends and colleagues praised his unbridled optimism in the face of health problems and the heartbreaking failures of his beloved team. Santo's long battle with diabetes cost him both his legs below the knees. The service in Chicago drew several hundred people, including Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ferguson Jenkins, Randy Hundley, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Jesse Jackson Sr.

Sherrill signs with Braves

Lefthander George Sherrill, who saved 51 games in two seasons with Baltimore before struggling last season with the Dodgers, has finalized a $1.2 million, one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves. Sherrill's deal was announced Friday after he passed a physical in Atlanta.
