Mangold: I'll report to camp

Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold said Friday he'll be present and accounted for when the Jets report for training camp in upstate Cortland Aug. 1.

Mangold, who's unhappy with his current contract, had been threatening to stage a boycott if he didn't get a new deal. But even without a new contract in sight, Mangold - due to pocket a base salary of $3.3 million in the final year of his five-year contract - feels it's best for him to be around at the camp's outset.

"We've looked at every angle and there's no point for me as a person - it's something that I signed up to do," Mangold said Friday during a studio interview with the NFL Network. "I want to be there for my teammates. I've got a battle going on on my left side. I should probably be there to help out.

"There's no reason not to be there. It doesn't seem that it would do me any good to do it. So I'll be there with bells on."

Ex-Jet Douglas headed to Miami

Free-agent defensive end Marques Douglas agreed to a two-year deal with the Dolphins worth a reported $2.5 million, ending his tenure with the Jets after just one season. Douglas fills a void for Miami, which recently suffered a pair of hits with the sudden retirement of nose tackle Jason Ferguson and defensive end Phillip Merling's season-ending Achilles' injury.

Contador on verge of repeat

Mark Cavendish captured the 18th stage of the Tour de France on Friday while Alberto Contador of Spain drew closer to victory. Contador, the defending champion, leads Luxembourg's Andy Schleck by eight seconds entering Saturday's decisive time trial, a day before the three-week race ends in Paris. Although Contador holds what appears a slender lead, he is expected to easily outpace Schleck in the 32-mile time trial from Bordeaux to Pauillac. Cavendish won a stage for the fourth time and the 14th time in just three years of competing in cycling's premier event. He surged to the front in the final couple of hundred yards.

The NBA fined Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn $50,000 for his comments about forward Michael Beasley's marijuana use. The league also fined the Timberwolves organization $50,000 Friday for what it called inappropriate comments. In an interview with a local ESPN Radio affiliate, Kahn called the recently acquired Beasley "a very young and immature kid who smoked too much marijuana" while he was playing in Miami.
