Cubs release veteran hurler Silva

Carlos Silva was released by the Cubs Sunday, one day after they told the veteran pitcher he would not make the Opening Day roster. The move leaves the Cubs on the hook for Silva's $11.5-million salary this season. The 31-year-old righthander made it clear Saturday he would not accept a minor-league assignment.

Nats swap Morgan for Dykstra

The Nationals traded outfielder Nyjer Morgan to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor-league infielder Cutter Dykstra, son of former Met Lenny Dykstra, and cash. Morgan became expendable once it became clear that Rick Ankiel and Jerry Hairston Jr. would platoon in centerfield.NBA

Alex Kovalev and James Neal scored in the shootout, Marc-Andre Fleury had 37 saves and host Pittsburgh won its fourth consecutive shootout, defeating the Panthers, 2-1. The Penguins moved within two points of Philadelphia in the race for the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference leads.

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team lost to host Vermont, 15-7, in its America East Conference opener. Victoria Cable scored three goals and Kaila Gottlick had two goals and an assist for SBU (3-6). Vermont (6-4) led 7-2 at halftime.

Stony Brook no-hits Army

Nick Tropeano (West Islip) and Brandon McNitt combined on a no-hitter and Chad Marshall singled home the game's only run in the third inning as the Stony Brook baseball team edged host Army, 1-0. It was SBU's second no-hitter in the last five games. Tropeano (4-1) pitched the first six innings, striking out seven. McNitt hurled the final three innings to earn his third save. A ninth-inning error ended their bid for a perfect game.
