COLLEGE FOOTBALL
USM players shot
Three Southern Mississippi football players - linebackers Martez Smith and Tim Green and defensive end Deddrick Jones - were shot just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday during a fight at a nightclub in Hattiesburg, Miss., and all three are in fair condition at a hospital, police said. Sgt. Allen Murray said that the shooting might be gang-related.
No changes at top of BCS
Oregon and Auburn are still in the top two spots in the BCS standings and No. 4 Boise State has narrowed the gap on No. 3 TCU.

Appleby takes Aussie Masters
Stuart Appleby ended a nine-year drought at home by winning the Australian Masters in Melbourne, rallying from a seven-shot deficit with birdies on his last two holes for a 6-under-par 65. Defending champion Tiger Woods completed the year without a victory, but finished alone in fourth place with two eagles in the last four holes . . . Robert Garrigus shot 8-under 64 to win the Children's Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., by three strokes over Roland Thatcher . . . South Korea's In-Kyung Kim won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico, closing with an 8-under 64 for a three-stroke victory over Suzann Pettersen.

UConn women roll
Tiffany Hayes scored 32 points and Bria Hartley (North Babylon) 18 as top-ranked Connecticut extended its winning streak to 79 games with a season-opening 117-37 rout of Holy Cross in Storrs. The Huskies play No. 2 Baylor Tuesday.
Rick Jackson had 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as host No. 10 Syracuse (2-0) beat Canisius, 86-67. It was the 831st career victory for Orange coach Jim Boeheim, moving him past Jim Phelan of Mount St. Mary's into fifth place in all-time Division I victories . . . Jeremy Hazell scored 28 points to lead four Seton Hall players in double figures in a 92-68 victory over Cornell in Newark.
