Vegas wins Hope Classic

Jhonattan Vegas made a 13-foot par putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to win the Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, Calif., holding off Gary Woodland for his first PGA Tour victory. The Venezuelan rookie won in just his fifth PGA Tour start despite putting his tee shot in the water on the 92nd hole of the five-day tournament. Vegas and Woodland eliminated defending champion Bill Haas with birdies on the first playoff hole after all three finished the final round at 27-under 333.

Kaymer takes Woods' No. 2

Martin Kaymer overtook Tiger Woods for the No. 2 ranking in the world, winning the Abu Dhabi championship by eight shots after shooting 6-under-par 66. Kaymer led by five going into the day and had no problem securing his third win in four years in Abu Dhabi, finishing at 24-under 264.

Kovalchuk lifts Devils

Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists, Jason Arnott scored twice and the resurgent Devils extended their winning streak to four with a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers at Prudential Center . . . Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist, and rookie Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves in the Philadelphia Flyers' 4-1 win in Chicago. Nikolay Zherdev and Scott Hartnell added goals, and Claude Giroux had three assists for the Flyers.

WOMEN's COLLEGE BASKETBALLNotre Dame beats St. John's

Devereaux Peters dominated inside with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to lead host No. 11 Notre Dame to a 69-36 rout of St. John's. Becca Bruszewski scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting for the Fighting Irish (17-4). The Red Storm (14-6) shot 32 percent. Leading scorer Shenneika Smith was held to seven points and 3-for-8 shooting.

Stony Brook tops Maine

Kirsten Jeter scored 28 points and junior Tamiel Murray forced a key turnover in the final seconds to lead the Stony Brook women's basketball team to a 73-70 win over host Maine. Jeter scored 18 of her 28 in the first half and also pulled down 10 rebounds.
