No. 1 Duke went more than 8 minutes without a field goal in the first half last night, and a sellout became a blowout for No. 25 Miami, which delighted a boisterous crowd with a 90-63 victory. The Hurricanes (14-3, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a No. 1 team for the first time, taking control with a stunning 25-1 run midway through the first half. The Blue Devils missed 13 consecutive shots despite numerous good looks, while four Hurricanes hit three-pointers during the run that transformed a 14-13 deficit into a 38-15 lead. Duke (16-2, 3-2) has fell to 0-2 when playing on an opponent's court.

NCAA calls foul on itself

The NCAA has found what it calls "a very severe issue of improper conduct" committed by former members of its own enforcement program during the Miami investigation, and will not deliver the long-awaited notice of allegations against the Hurricanes until an external review is completed. NCAA president Mark Emmert announced the findings yesterday. The sports governing body said former enforcement staff members worked with the criminal defense attorney for former Miami booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro "to improperly obtain information . . . through a bankruptcy proceeding that did not involve the NCAA."

Storm women lose on buzzer-beater

Brittney Sykes' 50-footer at the buzzer lifted Syracuse to a 60-57 victory over host St. John's. With 2.8 seconds left and the score tied at 57, Sykes stole the inbounds pass from the sideline and banked in the shot from just over half court for the victory. Shenneika Smith scored 21 points to lead St. John's (9-8, 3-2), which has lost three games on its final possession this season.

Stony Brook women lose

Brittany Crowell had 25 points and eight rebounds for UMBC in a 70-59 win over visiting Stony Brook in an America East game. Chikilra Goodman had 15 points and Dani Klupenger added 11 points for Stony Brook (11-8, 3-3). UMC improves to 6-13 and 2-4 . . . St. John the Baptist graduate Danielle Wilson had 11 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks as Dowling halted NIYT's 15-game winning streak in a 68-58 win in an ECC game. Julia Koppl added 15 points for Dowling (14-3, 8-0). Charlene Riddick had 17 points and Sabrinna Moore chipped in 12 points for NYIT (15-1, 7-1).

Lakers fall to Grizzlies, Howard hurt

Darrell Arthur scored 20 points and Mike Conley added 19 as the Memphis Grizzlies beat Los Angeles, 106-93, handing the Lakers their fourth straight loss and 10th in 12 games. Los Angeles lost its seventh consecutive road game, and center Dwight Howard missed the second half after aggravating his sore shoulder in the first half. Kobe Bryant scored 29 points for the Lakers . . . Dwyane Wade scored 35 points, LeBron James got his 34th career triple-double and the host Miami Heat rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat the Toronto Raptors, 123-116, in overtime. James finished with 31 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for Miami . . . Nate Robinson had 11 points and seven assists in 21 minutes off the bench, leading a furious fourth-quarter comeback as the host Chicago Bulls beat Detroit Pistons, 85-82 . . . Ty Lawson scored 21 points, Wilson Chandler had 20 and the visiting Denver Nuggets pulled away in the third quarter with a 105-95 win against Houston. James Harden scored 23 points for the Rockets, who have lost eight of nine.
