Union reaches out, league declines
The NHL last night declined an invitation from the players' union to meet as early as Wednesday to try to reach a new collective-bargaining agreement. The sides haven't met since the NHL turned down three counterproposals from the union Thursday, two days after the NHL's offer that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said last week that if a new deal wasn't reached by tomorrow, it would be impossible for a full regular-season schedule to be played.

Sandusky turned over to state
Jerry Sandusky, 68, was transferred from Centre County (Pa.) Jail to a state prison just outside Harrisburg. He will be tested and evaluated before he can be assigned a permanent "home" prison.
Dale Jr. officially cleared
Dale Earnhardt Jr. officially was cleared for this weekend's race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway after missing the past two weeks to recover from a pair of concussions. NASCAR's most popular driver was examined by neurosurgeon Jerry Petty one day after he drove 123 laps at half-mile Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga.

Dutrow denied on appeal
New York's top court has rejected Kentucky Derby-winning thoroughbred trainer Rick Dutrow Jr.'s appeal to overturn his 10-year ban for drug violations.
BASEBALL
Fisk charged with DUI
Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, 64, has been charged with driving under the influence after he was found asleep in his pickup truck in a New Lenox, Ill., cornfield Monday night, police said.
