Manchester United eliminates

rival Manchester City in FA Cup

Manchester United took a measure of revenge on Manchester City yesterday, ousting the defending champion from the FA Cup, 3-2. Wayne Rooney headed in two goals and Danny Welbeck struck on a volley in the first half of the third-round match. Host Manchester City's Vincent Kompany was ejected in the 12th minute for fouling Nani.

City humiliated United with a 6-1 Premier League win at Old Trafford this season and beat its rival in last year's FA Cup semifinals.

Feuding ManU-Liverpool to meet

Manchester United has drawn Liverpool in the FA Cup's fourth round, with their last meeting in October marked by a racial dispute. Liverpool's Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches for conduct toward United's Patrice Evra. He has not received an apology from Suarez, who expressed regret only "if" he caused offense by using the Spanish word "negro." Liverpool accused ManU of getting a rival's star banned "without anything beyond an accusation." Suarez will be suspended for the match the weekend of Jan. 28-29.

Liverpool apologizes for racial abuse Liverpool apologized to the opposing player who was racially abused Friday during an FA Cup match at Liverpool. Oldham's Tom Adeyemi was reduced to tears by insults from fans. Police arrested a 20-year-old man Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated offense and released him Sundaypending further inquiries.

Timberwolves drop Wizards to 0-8

Kevin Love had 20 points and 16 rebounds and rookie Ricky Rubio had 13 points and 14 assists as the visiting Timberwolves routed the 0-8 Wizards, 93-72.

Oosthuizen repeats in Africa Open

Louis Oosthuizen holed a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to defeat fellow South African Tjaart van der Walt by two shots and retain his title at the Africa Open in East London, South Africa. The former British Open champion shot a 6-under-par 67 for a 27-under 265.

Stricker up by 5 at T of C

Steve Stricker ran off four straight birdies for a 4-under 69 that gave him a five-stroke lead entering the final round at the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii. Tied for second are defending champion Jonathan Byrd (67), Martin Laird (67) and Webb Simpson (69).

Book by Tiger's former swing coach

Hank Haney has written a book about his six years as Tiger Woods' swing coach. Most of Woods' associates signed a nondisclosure agreement, but Haney said he didn't.

McDaniels back to Patriots

The Patriots announced that Josh McDaniels will return as an offensive assistant this week. He will aid offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, who was named Penn State's coach Saturday.-- AP
