Derby winner 'Animal' will run in Belmont
Trainer Graham Motion announced Friday that Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Animal Kingdom will run June 11 in the Belmont Stakes. "He bounced out of the Preakness very well and we are looking forward to running in the Belmont Stakes," said Motion, speaking from his base at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md. Animal Kingdom will try to become the 12th horse to complete the Derby-Belmont double, last done in 1995 by Thunder Gulch.
GOLF
Donald tied for lead
Luke Donald, Italian teenager Matteo Manassero and Alvaro Quiros were tied for the lead after the second round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club near London. Quiros closed with three birdies for a 4-under 67, equaling the best round of the day, Manassero birdied No. 18 in a 70 and Donald had a 72.
Sergio surges at Nelson
Sergio Garcia and Ryan Palmer share the lead after two rounds at the Byron Nelson Championship at 8-under 132. Garcia posted his second consecutive 4-under 66 at the TPC Four Seasons in Irving, Tex.
Murota leads seniors
Kiyoshi Murota shot a 5-under 67 to take a four-stroke lead in the Senior PGA Championship at Louisville. Nick Price and Hale Irwin are tied for second.
Rockets, McHale talk
A person familiar with the situation says the Houston Rockets are close to hiring Kevin McHale as their new coach. McHale would take over for Rick Adelman, who left after his fourth season in Houston. McHale, a Hall of Fame player for the Boston Celtics, spent 15 years with the Timberwolves in his native Minnesota. -- AP
