Celtics sign Shaq
The Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics signed 7-1, 325-pound Shaquille O'Neal Wednesday, adding the 15-time All-Star to a team needing his size with center Kendrick Perkins recovering from knee surgery that could sideline him until February. The deal with the free-agent center is for two years and about $3 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said.

Jury deliberates Pitino case
A jury deliberated for nearly two hours but went home without reaching a decision in the case of a Kentucky woman accused of demanding millions from Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino to keep quiet about their sexual tryst. Karen Cunagin Sypher, 50, has pleaded not guilty to extortion and other charges.
Injunction against Alomar
The wife of retired baseball star Roberto Alomar has obtained a temporary injunction against him, following a domestic dispute over the weekend. Maria Del Pilar Alomar, 33, said in a complaint filed Monday that the couple got into an argument at their Hillsborough County (Tampa, Fla.) home. No arrests were made. A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13.

Nets' Lopez withdraws
Nets center Brook Lopez, struggling to recover from a bout with mono, has withdrawn from the U.S. national team and will be replaced by Washington's JaVale McGee. Lopez informed USA Basketball officials that he didn't believe he was in good enough condition. - APbaseball
Ducks lose Wells, sign lefty Keisler
Coming off the best start of his brief stint with the Ducks, Kip Wells decided to leave the team. Wells, who tossed six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in a 5-3 win over Camden Tuesday night, intended to return home if he reached a pre-determined number of innings without drawing major-league interest. The Ducks signed 34-year-old lefty pitcher Randy Keisler from the Mexican League.
